Silva can coach an attack. There's no sign that Vieira actually can in my opinion. Before anyone mentions last season, our chance creation mostly came from transitions and pressing - if you look into it (or even just think about what we watched) we didn't do much when we had to break a defence down. This season our numbers are appalling wherever I look. Bottom 3 in many metrics. Some will say so what, we're not in the bottom 3 of the table but the signs are not good as we are currently and whether Vieira can translate his principles (whatever they actually are - has anyone actually worked out the plan for how to create chances beyond play out from the back, get it out wide and hope for the best) into consistent end product remains to be seen.

I have slept on it but it doesn't get any better.
As soon as I saw the team sheet with no centre forward I knew it would be a long afternoon - dreadful error by the Manager when playing at home.
Fulham were on it from the off while we were slow and looked tired.
Tomkins had a half to forget and given that we were down to 10 men by half time he should have been subbed because he was one mistake away from a sending off and so it came to pass - this is not hindsight - it was our half time discussion point and so another bad mistake by the Manager.
The ref was trigger happy and for once gave us nothing at all.
Mitrovic is a vile cheat as well - despicable to get a fellow pro sent off - albeit too many players do it nowadays.
He also fell over at the drop of a hat - quite pathetic.
An afternoon to forget but I am beginning to doubt PV's tactical acumen and his heart to make big decisions because it was obvious inside 15 mins that he had cocked up.
A worrying start to the rest of the season to be honest!

A good summary - i was amazed with the team he put out, the same as Forest except for a suspension. Unbelievable.

After 6 weeks off, 4 weeks working with the players, how has PV and Roberts not learnt from the Forest debacle?

Zaha upfront in away games when the opposition push up is a decent call, it doesn't work when teams sit deep (Forest) or at home.

Tomkins in defence must have been known about 6 weeks ago but it looked like he was confused by his role. Both bookings were stupid and avoidable - yes Mitrovic made a meal of it, but was this much different from Andersen at Liverpool? Tomkins could have been 'smart' and run across his line, making it look like he was being fouled, instead he was lazy and just tried to block with an arm.

After the sending off surely one of Eze and Olise needed to be taken off - neither were doing much (again) and clearly we needed to 10 to work hard and be organised, something neither are great at.

But must worrying for me what is our attacking strategy? Goalie rolls it out to a defender, the midfield rarely come to collect and so we end up going long despite having not one of the front 4 capable of winning a header (Zaha is 6 ft FFS - it's about time he learnt).

Also, when Mitrovic is their greatest threat from set pieces why did we not put our best header up against him? Even in open play he drifted to the back to attack Clyne and repeatedly neither centre back went with him.

Their first goal was nicely worked by showed our limitations.
We gave the ball cheaply trying to pass it out of defence and then Mitrovic went wide to receive a pass - no one goes with him.
When he crossed it a small midfielder runs in and scores a good header - neither centre back or a midfielder tracked the run.

Just out of interest when has say Olise, Eze or Zaha made this type of run? Maybe Eze v Wolves. Zaha usually just hides at the back post, rather than gambling and making a run (play off goal v Brighton run has never been repeated).

Overall a really disappointing performance

A poor goal to concede.Mitchell got drawn out to an advanced position and when Mitrovic received the ball out wide, Eze never made any attempt to close him down and the Fulham forward had time to cross the ball.Decordova-Reid got between our two central defenders and was in acres of space when he headed the ball into the net.He has only scored 4 headed goals in his PL career.

Appears that all the early optimism regarding Vieira appointment has disappeared and that we are struggling to see where the next win is coming.
Are we in a fight for survival this season so soon and exactly what are our American owners going to do to simply ensure our survival, given that Zaha is surely out the door???

I've said it before and I'll keep saying it, we have two major problems atm:

1. PV - There was rightly a lot of optimism surrounding him and his start, he plays good football, can attract players to the palace and there was a general good feel about the gaff. Does scream to me, however, of the ol' saying 'When it's good it's good, but when it's bad it's BAD!!'. He has his faults (subs etc.) of course but which manager doesn't? My concern is that our downhill form could start to accelerate with no signs of halting lest reversing this trajectory in sight. I have reservations over PV's ability to deal with this.

2. Ownership - when we say ownership, we usually refer to 'funding'. As it stands, we have two good CBs and some nice 'flair' players in the squad. That's lovely. However, what is less so, is possibly our best player of all time may soon be leaving, we have gaps in the starting XI let alone the lack of depth in the squad, and our star players can look somewhat lightweight when the stomach for a fight is needed.

My fear is that we will not see any new incoming players (and when I say that, I mean individuals who will come in and make a difference to the first team, not yet more 'one for future, Moldovan Maradonas etc etc) , our slump will continue and PV will not have the answers for this. I fear the latter may be true but the former is almost guaranteed.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

If the slump continues and we are on the slippery slope to relegation, I suspect that PV will be jettisoned and perhaps Dyche approached, if indeed he is not at another club.He also has a promotion to the PL on his CV !

Perhaps a loan for Mohamed Elneny might be under consideration, a player who brings energy, enthusiasm and commitment in the midfield 'Engine room'.

That would be 'oh so Palace' Willo so dare I say not an outlandish prophecy at all.

I sincerely hope not however, again, could well play out as such.

I don't agree with that. I think by and large Viera has been very good for us. Attacking, exciting young players but we are under performing and were comprehensively outplayed by Fulham. My only question was the absence of either Edouard or Mateta in attack which I think would have made a big difference against the excellent Diop, even if only to allow more space for Zaha and Olise. Something clearly gone on in the background with these two.

When French heads drop all hell can let loose.

Sort of the point of being a football fan though isn't it?

If that is 'snooze snooze snooze' then perhaps football isn't for you.

Big 'ifs' though, and that's the point. The smarter betting is surely for us to lose to Bournemouth, further despair, but then beat Spurs unexpectedly and dream once more!
