Coutts have apologised Some background from my days in banking. Banks have always had secret list of people they will not do business with. In my day I was quietly informed that Robert Maxwell was a no no because the bank considered him a bad credit risk and more importantly a crook although at the time this was hearsay and not proof. My bank I am also happy to say refused to do business with the Nazis one of the few American banks who did not. Nigel Farage is an interesting one because he is not a powerful businessman like Maxwell looking for funds for his companies. He is just an individual looking for a personal banker to manage his own funds. It's quite clear now (BBC please take note) that they cancelled his account because they don't like his politics. Many will say hooray whilst ignoring the fact that members of his own family have had similar problems with other UK banks. And this is one of the key issues, ordinary members of the public related to someone the banks don't like are being blacklisted, sins of the father and all that. Some MP's have also been blacklisted which is why this issue is getting so much air time, nothing gets more urgent attention then when it impacts MPs. Anyway the government is going to legislate I'm not sure how that will work as in the Maxwell case I doubt anyone would say my bank was wrong to refuse to have anything to do with him. Free speech has to be protected but banks also have the right not to do business with people they consider a bad risk, try squaring that circle. For the Nigel haters just remember a vicar was banned by the Yorkshire Building Society , it could happen to you. Edited by Badger11 (20 Jul 2023 5.56pm)

it seems to be happening in many countries. The article below is behind a money-wall....but you get the general idea. the ideology of the fella below (Derek Blighe) is avowedly 'centre right'.....similar to Nigel Farage. His attempts to protect the vulnerable from rapes & other attacks has seemingly put a target-sign on his back. Edited by PalazioVecchio (20 Jul 2023 6.56pm)

Edited by Badger11 (20 Jul 2023 5.56pm) The Coutts apology is quite fulsome and says all the right things. However, these closures are far from new as we know and this apology could have been done over a week ago, so it sounds incredibly hollow to me. Especially when you hear that the government was threatening banks with putting extra conditions over licenses over this. The rot within banks is down to the core.....as the report that Farage received makes very clear.....This rot is about the political nature of the people (there shouldn't be politics to this extent within banks) and it is within all the institutions. I view this as very temporary and not something that can be fixed with 'tut tuts'. Edited by Stirlingsays (20 Jul 2023 6.41pm)

I care not a jot about Nigel Farage, but for a bank to refuse to run accounts for a person and/or their family because it (the bank - or actually some person or some persons at the bank) disagrees with their perfectly legitimate if distasteful political views, is the start of a very dodgy slippery slope.

We are now living in a world that mirrors the dystopia of Orwellian nightmares.

anybody remembers the details from Canada ? was it Truck Drivers on Strike, and PM Justin Trudeau allegedly froze their bank accounts ? the tyranny going hand in glove with the cashless society. I will always boycott any business that refuses to accept cash. Edited by PalazioVecchio (20 Jul 2023 7.20pm)

People like that should be getting honours not losing bank accounts.

The Parrot is at it again Independent bank decides to kick customer out for its own reasons shocker Technically it can do what it wants, unless it gets called out publicly and is forced to wind back and grovel I don't agree with it but at the end of the day it's a privately run corporation not a community bank. Besides, there are new rules coming in to favour account holders. 90 day warnings about closure and the right to appeal etc. Although it should be a basic right to have access to banking services regardless of background it's currently not the case.
Did you know? 98.0000001% of people are morons. |

Although not technically a bank, by far one of the worst culprits for this sort of nonsense is the 'Go Fund Me' Website.
