You all do love to have a moan about something the Mail reports as a “woke” waste of money!

Neither the Mail nor anybody here knows the true rationale which lies behind this project. It could easily be multi-faceted and intended to meet several objectives. People tend not to throw money at worthless projects so making assumptions on any analysis presented by the Mail is many times more questionable than a peer reviewed decision made by a University.

A spokesman for UKRI said:

'UKRI invests in a diverse research and innovation portfolio. Decisions to fund the research projects we support are made via a rigorous peer review process by relevant independent experts from across academia and business.'

Really, haven't you followed the news over the last few years?

The Daily Mail appears to have no such difficulty when it comes to bunging 600 millions to Rwanda for b*gger all.

A tory rag well past it's sell-by date.

I follow it avidly everyday.

News is about important things. Opinion pieces in right wing rags written to wind up the gullible is not news. It’s political propaganda.

Hmm

Try Creative Scotland funding p*** when it faces major budget cuts.

I used the BBC as I would not be believed if it was the Mail.

Creative Scotland has replaced the Scottish Arts Council which was mired in scandal after scandal and nothing seems to have changed.

So yeah people do waste public money.

Oh alright here's the Mail with a bit more on previous idiotic decisions by CS.

And a more than equally expected response.
£800,000 spent on research into 3 short stories written in the 19th Century seems like a lot to me.
Apparently not.
Spending the money on providing shelter for some of Edinburgh's homeless would seem a more worthwhile use of the money.

UK Research and Innovation has funded this. I'm not sure it qualifies as Innovation because we all know what the outcome will be.

You would think they would be funding research into something useful like technology or medicine, or the Green economy that the SNP is so keen on.

Opinions, opinions!

You are entitled to hold them. So is the Mail. You are not though responsible for taking the decisions so not either on deciding whether it's a waste of public money. Auditors will do that.

That's the Mail's spin on the research. I suspect there is rather more involved than that. It might just involve how to avoid people becoming homeless in the first place, through studying the origins of prejudice and how it has transferred into modern life. I am stretching and guessing of course but we don't know and I prefer to leave things to those who do.

Do we? You aren't just jumping to conclusions having been led to them by the Mail?

I am perfectly sure that there is loads of technological and medical research being undertaken in Universities in Scotland. Why should there not be some into social issues? Do they not matter?

Yes I'm sure the life of a working class Scots family will be changed with the knowledge that Daniel Defoe had some very outdated ideas about island people. And don't pretend that the outcome isn't a forgone conclusion.

Indeed, but presumably better spent on identifying social issues in Scotland rather than the Pacific, or are there no social issues in Scotland?
