Would love to see some photos of that day.

You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer.

Sorry but I don't have photos but there were plenty in the Advertiser. Try their website [Link] for back issues, mind you it was before the web was worldwide so may not be there.

I was in the Arthur Waite, for some reason. I usually sttod in the Holmesdale road end.

We needed to win 5-0 and Man City had to lose for us to go up automatically, otherwise it was the play-offs. Birmingham were already down.

They were in a party mood, but it went sour after we scored our 4th goal (I think). Though a couple of their lads had already encroached on the pitch previously.

People are right in that there was a mass brtawl, and the police horses actually got cheered for charging the Birmingham fans. It was good to see the police whacking a few Blue heads from horseback.

By the way, I was on the train from London to Birmingham after the match, and I travelled with a load of Birmingham fans. They were a nice bunch, in fancy dress, and it was their mate who got arrested for going up the floodlight tower. They said that he wanted to come down straight away, but the cops told him they would arrest him if he did. So he thought he might as well stay up there for a bit and make a show of it.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

should also point out that at the time a lot of brum 'supporters' came down on the train and got off at the station Crystal palace, had to then be police escorted to the ground.
took the police 30-40 mins to clear the pitch, after which we knew that we couldn't get automatic promotion, so the game just drifted.

Yeah it was just manic. 4-0 up after about half an hour and I think City were 1-0 down at Bradford so we were on course until the Brummie t***s intervened......This was less than a month after Hillsborough so the media had a field day with it and highlighted the new problems now that fences had been brought down in light of those events in Sheffield.

I was 14 in the Members stand with my Dad and was horrified. I can still remember a steward having his head kicked in by a couple of 'clowns' right in front of me.

I think the game was held up for at least half an hour and with the atmosphere changed when the teams came back Palace never got that momentum back and by the time the first half had finished, City had finished there game and got a draw and we ended up only winning 4-1.
