Interesting point - what classes prejudice? This could cover race, sex, religion, colour etc etc.

So taking it a logical progession it COULD be extended to followers of a team. If we say we hate Brighton it's prejudice!

Pikeys a term is normally associated with theaving scum of any race, sex, religion, colour. I've seen it applied to Charlton and Gillingham - and there are probably more.

Gypsies are not necessarily pikeys, pikeys are not necessarily gypsies.

I'm sure if we complain to other moderators (eg Lee Owen) about people calling us Nigels they'll instantly take the appropriate action - and there goes a flying pig!

So unless we class slagging anyone who doesn't support Palace as racial prejudice, there's no point in this discussion.

Er, excuse me, why have I been brought into this debate? I made one post on the first page and then made a decision not to get any more involved, having been through all this on more than one occasion.

Just like you assumed I'm a young, liberal, white, middle class student whose a naive political amateur, and whose got no experience of working class communities. Phew - what sort of political outlook takes you there? You know nothing of me. Actually, I'm a 45 year old father of 2 who's lived in South East London for 20 odd years, and I've been politically active for long enough no longer to need to brag about it. What sort of political culture jumps to such quick stereotype conclusions about people, and immediately launches into such vitriolic abuse?

Interesting thread, though. I can see that a lot of you just use "pikeys" to mean the same thing as "chavs". Trouble is, as far as I know "chavs" wasn't a word already in use until a few years ago, with an existing meaning. "Pikeys" is not a new word, and definitely already had a meaning - it still has that connotation, whatever you want it to mean now.

But there's a load of examples on this thread of people just straightforwadly hating travellers. And for me, whether or not you want to call it racism, it's offensive prejudice. I think it's ignorant to damn a whole community as lying, thieving scum. That doesn't mean I'm naive about what goes on, just as I'm not naive about who does most of the burglaries and muggings on north peckham estates.

As for the "No Surrender" slogan - this is not some quaint, cultural emblem. Whatever your position on the nationalist struggle in Ireland, this slogan is hugely emotive, partisan and historically loaded. Which is why the fascists adopted it. And why it's use by JimboCPFC on this thread required a response.
