I've yet to be given a valid reason why racism should be treated as the mother and father of all insults.

People have been killed in their millions because of racial hatred. Does that not tell you something?

Ask me about Ronald de Boer.

Yes it does, but in an entirely different context which is totally irrelevent to what i'm trying to argue.

Are you sugesting that making monkey noises at a black player is linked with people being killed in the past because of racial hatred?

No...making monkey noises at a black player is aimed at making someone feel sub-human as in the days of slavery which is totally unacceptable. Abuse about hair colour and height is totally different.

All Football fans are scum and should be treated as such

But why would it make you feel sub human?

The people who make these gestures and noises are morons who are so deluded that it's almost laughable, why their 'opinion' should bother anybody to the extent that it would make them feel sub human, is beyond me.

Obviously people should be stopped by all means from doing this, but we need to be careful where we draw the line. If we are to punish fans for abusing players, then it can't just for abuse directed at the colour of a player's skin.

well where do you draw the line, kav?

The Precedent has been set, whereby a fan making monkey noises at a black player can be heavily fined and banned for a substantial period of time. If something as relitively 'minor' as that can be considered deeply offensive, then you have no choice but to give the same treatment to those who abuse footballers because of their height, hair colour etc.

It sounds ridiculous I agree, but you have to be consistent and not a blithering hypocrite.

we can't stand up, drink or smoke anymore.

Now we can't shout at players.

I called Bellamy an obnoxious Welsh dwarf on Saturday (repeatedly).

This is not a medically accurate fact as he doesn't suffer from dwarfism, and I'm not fully convinced that Welsh isn't a term of abuse anyway.

If I was having the same go at Earnshaw, would it racist ??

NO level playing field as far as I can see.

Just to put a different slant on this discussion, but is having monkey noises/gestures directed at you any worse than being abused because of your height, hair colour, sexual orientation, nationality etc.

Spot on. The difference is that black people have a voice whereas the other groups you mentioned are such rare examples that it is just overlooked.

Only if you were commenting on his colour.

Everyone is so confused about racial issues, I don't think the government ever did anything to properly educate people. There are millions of misconceptions.

so saying he's a black obnoxious welsh dwarf is unacceptable, but if I'm not making reference to his colour, that's OK ?

WHY ?

None of it (except the Welsh bit) is libellous, and black is a descriptive term, not a qualitative one.

I know it's slightly off the subject, but had a black or Asian fan done the same to a white player do you think that any action would be taken? Just a thought.
