I honestly can't see why people have got offended at Penge for starting this thread.

It is an article which has clearly brought up a good debate, and one which I, for one, found very interesting.

And before anyone says anything I'm not just arse kissing a moderator.

Nick, you're just arse kissing a moderator. (Kidding)

Seriously, I wasn't offended by this thread, I just wondered why it had been started. Initially I thought it was an attempt to stir up a controversial debate, which isn't in itself a bad thing. I was informed that wasn't the case and accepted that, by which time a debate had started which I continued to contribute to.

A couple of other people also questioned the motivation behind the thread, so I wasn't the only one to make that observation.

Either way, it has been an interesting and typically wide-ranging conversation, and one which I have enjoyed participating in. I believe these debates are valuable, as long as we can read and appreciate others' views without resorting to name-calling and stereotyping (ie loony-left, PC, racist etc)

I used to work with some Mohammeds in Penge McDonald's. One was Somalian, a couple ****stani, another Morrocan. We used to call them Mo 1, 2 and 3!

Moe the barman in the Simpson's - is he a Mohammed???

Out of the top 100 names for the last 3 years, my name does not feature once!

Isn't Moe from The Simpsons Jewish though....

And his surname is Syzlak (sp?) so I'm guessing Marco could be right with his Jewish comment...

All homo sapiens originated in Africa so it depends how far you want to take it back. We're all descended from black people, even those you state are of "European origin".

As for Romans, they were made up of people from all over the Roman Empire, including large parts of North Africa and Asia [Link]

There are many documented cases of dark-skinned people coming to these shores centuries before the last 50-100 years you state.

"Black and Asian presence in the North East of England can be traced back to Septimius Severus, a North African Libyan, who ruled England as Roman Emperor between 193-211 AD." [Link]

Right then, first of all, it's far from proved that Africa is the cradle of mankind, it's even looking doubtful that mankind even originated from the same frickin species of ape let alone the same frickin continent, so you're clutching at pretty dodgy looking straws there Sethybabes me ole mucker! But what's all this cobblers got to do with the argument?

My argument is that us Brits have a pretty damned rich culture that is being denied by the left-wingers and slowly subjugated and swamped by foreign culture.

Your argument seems to be that we actually have no culture of our own and any we may happen to have stumbled across by chance is just a mish-mash of foreign cultures anyway and not only that, we're all black and come from Africa!

YEAH! RIGHTO!

Anyway, the Romans were indeed made up of people from all over the place, but so what? There is a s***-load of doubt that Britain was actually even conquered by Rome, but that's another argument, the point is, by the time Rome was being sacked, Britain had long-forgotten the Romans. The Britons instantly reverted back to their way of life and culture the moment the last hobnail boot was marching up the gang-plank.

I can't argue against Severus and wouldn’t anyway (although his friend Plautianus might), he certainly was a black man, but again so what? How does Severus being black detract from my argument that Britain has a unique culture? Neither Rome, nor Severus had any lasting impact on British culture whatsoever.

Yes of course there has been many documented cases of dark-skinned people coming to these shores since time out of mind, but so what? What's your point? Are you saying an Island of proud Germanic warrior-like people was in anyway greatly influenced by a handful of traders and travellers from warmer climes? Palestine had many regular visitors from mainland Europe a thousand years ago or so, they were known as Crusaders, they built castles. The first King of Jerusalem was French if my memory serves me right, so are you saying that Palestinians enjoy a rich culture heavily influenced by the French, English and Germans? Don't make me laugh!

Why can't you lot just accept that Britain DOES have a rich culture and DID have a rich culture long before the introduction of Chicken Madras and Beef Chow Mein? Why can't you just accept that we do have a culture worth preserving? It’s not a crime! It wouldn’t make you a Nazi ya know!

Is the British way of life and British culture really under threat? Ask the people of Bradford. Luton. Birmingham. Manchester. I could go on. And on. And on.

Pete, do you have any references or links to back up any of your historical assertions? You are dismissive of the "Out of Africa" theory, but don't have anything to back up statements such as "it's far from proved that Africa is the cradle of mankind, it's even looking doubtful that mankind even originated from the same species of ape let alone the same continent".

I have seen plenty of evidence in print and in documentaries which proves that humans originated in Africa and I provided links to reputable sources such as the BBC. Can you do the same? You have obviously done a lot of research on the subject, but it would be interesting to know where you're getting your information from.

You make many assertions which aren't backed up by any evidence in references or links, such as "Britons instantly reverted back to their way of life and culture the moment the last hobnail boot was marching up the gang-plank", and "Neither Rome, nor Severus had any lasting impact on British culture whatsoever".

You said that the Romans were "of European origin", which they clearly all weren't, as the Severus example demonstrates. And there were many more black Romans, and other non-Europeans throughout history who came here and influenced our culture in more ways that you acknowledge.

Here's a reference: [Link]
and another: [Link]

Can you divulge your sources, such as links or a bibliography?

i have to say i'm with seth on this one. and there's nothing wrong with posting a message of support when he has ha so much mud slung at him.

at the same time though, pete is right. we should be proud of our culture. I think we all are, but that doesn't mean that we can discount the majority of historical and evolutionary evidence that supports the 'out of africa' theory.

I aint discounting the 'Out Of Africa' theory, I'm just saying that all theoretical movements are shrouded in doubt and so we also shouldn't discount the 'Out Of Europe' theory either. And the same must be said for the 'Apeman' theory. The only FACT is that we just don't know and we probably never will, so to point blank state that we were all black and came from Africa is at best an educated guess! IT IS UNPROVEN! So I don't know how Sethybabes has managed to find this 'Proof' of his. It's the usual response from the left though; ignore all questions posed. Fail to admit that Britain has it's own unique culture AGAIN! Respond with "Yeah but no but yeah but.."

Seth, my knowledge on s*** is formed by reading books and watching documentaries. Yes I could sit here for hours on end searching the net for links that substantiate my argument - which is simply that Britain has a culture of it's own - but I aint gonna coz I've got better things to do with my time mate. I could give you a link to a site that still believes the world's flat, it proves nothing at all. You could point me to some professor's site that proves 'Out Of Africa', but I could point you at some professor’s site the proves 'Out Of Peckham', THERE IS NO PROOF! To be honest, I find it laughable that you feel I need to link sources that prove Britain has a culture of it's own, that's f***ing incredible! Why do the left hate Britain so much? Why are you so ashamed of your own people?

Your inability to accept that the Britons returned to their way of life following the departure of Rome's influence tells me you know nothing or very little of the history of Britain. THIS IS FACT MATE! I don't even know why you'd even throw doubt on such a well documented era of British history, go to the library mate, whatever, it's fact.

Another fact; the Roman's ARE of European origin ya fool, where the f*** d'ya think Rome is? You DO know that Rome is the cradle of the Roman Empire right? You DO know Italy is in Europe right? Rome's origins lie in Europe, GET OVER IT!

I say again Britain has (and always has had) it's own unique culture which must be preserved.

Seth says "Yeah but no but yeah but no..."

I'm proud of my culture, but I disagree that its being subjugated. Granted there are areas where other cultures may be equally prominent, but that doesn't mean that English (or is it British?) culture doesn't exist there just as strongly.
