If he actually received any money from the civil list you might have an argument... but he doesn't.

He and his family live on the money that ordinary people pay them in their taxes. He is a public figure by virtue of the fact that he wants all of the perks of royalty, he has to accept the downside as well as the upside of public life.

Some members of his family receive money from the civil list but he doesn't. Besides the money they receive from the civil list is only a fraction of their total income - you may be surprised to know they are actually indepenently wealthy. Therefore any claim for Harry's pocket money to be stopped for poor fancy dress selection (on the grounds it comes from the public purse) may be unfair.

I'm not a bit fan of the royals either but I still don't understand why you begrudge paying them for what you yourself called "a job for life, 24 hours a day"?

And you think these qualities are inherited? That someone who is nice but dumb should be in charge of our country?

1) I wasn't talking about the royal family, I was talking about this 'meritocracy' bollocks and the snooty attitude that only intellectuals are of any merit!

2) The monarchy don't run our country!

Point 2 is invalidated if we say that my comments can be attributed to both the Royal Family and the government - are you suggesting therefore that loyal, decent people should be in charge of the country regardless of their intellect?

There are countless systems of governance throughout the world that work equally as well that do not rely on the idea that someone is born to be the head of state, no matter how useless, talentless or worthless. Surely the idea that should be promoted is that of a meritocracy?

The idea of a monarchy is completely out of date in the 21st century.

Where are these systems then? Name them.

So you think only the intellectual elite should be at the top of the pile then do you? You don't consider bravery, loyalty, decency of any merit at all? You think us thickies should know our limits in life and know our place then do ya? f***ing meritocracy my arse, what a complete load of pseudo-intellectual snobby bollocks!

It's the so-called great thinkers of the world that have caused the most f***ing problems throughout history!

As someone who is arguing for the existence of the monarchy, it is a bit much to call my idea of a meritocracy 'snobby.' I simply think that people should be appointed to positions on merit, not because of who their mummy or daddy was. The Royals are the ones who want to keep the whole idea of class and privilege going, that's snobby.

Similarly we could keep the Royal Family but just as some sort of freak show for the tourists - and they can take their money from the tourists rather than the taxpayer.  We wouldn't need a president to replace them.

Yes I am!

But I'm not talking about the monarchy when I say it! The monarchy does NOT RUN this country! Politicians do! What part of 'the monarchy do not run the country' do you not understand?

If we scrapped the monarchy and opened up the palaces we'd still get tourists.  They come here for many reasons.Think of all the other countries in the world without a monarchy, do they not get any tourists?  Course they do.And any way, to say that we need to keep the monarchy with all their powers (like the royal prerogative which is used by governments regularly) and privellages to keep tourists happy is ridiculous.  My taxes and the taxes of normal people shouldn't go in the pockets of a fantastically wealthy family just to keep some tourists happy.Edited by cpfc-rjd (14 Jan 2005 3:42pm)

SO DO I! To positions of power. Monarch of England is not 'a position.'

So, you think we should be governed by good blokes and women who are all very well meaning but haven't a clue? Aye, that would stand this country in wonderful stead!
