Over 200 people were killed before that terrible day.

Indeed. First bombers were Protestant paramilitaries, surprisingly. Add to that the B Specials and random Catholic men and women being beaten up by them and the RUC it looks like that Sunday was the last straw for many, what would have been up to then, moderates from the Catholic community.

The did try the peaceful route first tbf but the authorities and opposing community were having none of that.

They then took the wrong route but many are culpable from all sides that the situation was allowed to get to that.

If McGuinness had been prosecuted and convicted of anything that would be different.

The army, police and secret services must have volumes of data on McGuinness yet he remains uncharged with anything.

His later work could not be more in contrast and we can see his achievement in the peace process to do that he would need to be competent and well-educated.

I have a much more doubtful view now of the media than I did before not just this but in general.

That book is just 2 journalists project on the side to make money out of it.

In 1973, he was convicted by the Republic of Ireland's Special Criminal Court, after being arrested near a car containing 250 pounds of explosives and nearly 5,000 rounds of ammunition. He refused to recognise the court, and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. In court, he declared his membership of the Provisional IRA without equivocation: "I am a member of Óglaigh na hÉireann and very, very proud of it". After his release, and another conviction in the Republic for IRA membership.
Just because the book exposes aspects of his 'career' that you would rather have hidden, does not make it "that book is just 2 journalists project on the side to make money out of it".

The troubles all started because of that day.

No The Troubles started in 1969 three years earlier but if you are looking for the really big spark that kicked it off big time then that date in '72 was it.

What really kicked it off was the IRA starting to kill soldiers sent there to protect Catholics.

Wrong type of soldiers in the wrong place and incorrectly briefed.

Don't forget that there were also armed paramilitaries including McGuinness. It's surprising how many people miss that out.

It is not surprising people miss that out as they simply don't know if it's true.

Well if we are playing Troubles Top Trumps then what really kicked it off is when the UVF declared war in 1966 on the then peaceful not involved in armed conflict Republican community/IRA and not long after that them and their Protestant thug mates and the police started attacking non-violent cathlolic civil rights marches and then soon after that started t burn them out of their homes.

Your revisionism is incorrect, Michael. Read up on the 'Border Campaign', when the 'peaceful IRA' engaged in a border guerilla war.

The Troubles is a part of history that should be buried because neither side covered themselves in glory. For every Protestant act of aggression, there was an aggressive response from the Catholics and vice verse. Thank goodness that matters have improved dramatically over the past 20 years there.

Arguing over who started it achieves nothing, other than illiciting incorrect statements and cock waving. It is a regrettable period of history for Britain and Ireland.

The 'Border Campaign' ended in the 1950's Matthew. We were talking about the 1960's. Do keep up.

If you must skim read wikipedia at least try to get the facts straight or mistakes will be made as you have just shown.

Why did the IRA start killing soldiers sent there to protect Catholics from Protestant violence?

Funny how some people pick and choose the bits of the Saville Inquiry that suits

As has been mentioned many times on this thread, no one comes out of the troubles particularly well but let's not pretend that McGuinness does not have a substantial amount of blood on his hands

His obituaries say he left a widow; in fact he left hundreds of widows.

The border campaign went on until the 60's, Michael:

To many, the Border Campaign was the precursor to the Troubles. I personally think that is too simple a view and the Troubles should be viewed as a continuation of the previous century of armed struggle in Ireland.
