The did try the peaceful route first tbf but the authorities and opposing community were having none of that. They then took the wrong route but many are culpable from all sides that the situation was allowed to get to that.

Wrong type of soldiers in the wrong place and incorrectly briefed. Don't forget that there were also armed paramilitaries including McGuinness. It's surprising how many people miss that out. It is not surprising people miss that out as they simply don't know if it's true.

Your revisionism is incorrect, Michael. Read up on the 'Border Campaign', when the 'peaceful IRA' engaged in a border guerilla war. The Troubles is a part of history that should be buried because neither side covered themselves in glory. For every Protestant act of aggression, there was an aggressive response from the Catholics and vice verse. Thank goodness that matters have improved dramatically over the past 20 years there. Arguing over who started it achieves nothing, other than illiciting incorrect statements and cock waving. It is a regrettable period of history for Britain and Ireland.

The border campaign went on until the 60's, Michael: To many, the Border Campaign was the precursor to the Troubles. I personally think that is too simple a view and the Troubles should be viewed as a continuation of the previous century of armed struggle in Ireland.
