I have only been watching since 1946 so cannot pass comment on Peter Simpson--Byrne-Holton-Bright-Burridge-Armstrong are among the best, Byrne was very skillful,possibly the cleverest player to pull on a Palace shirt.
and did a lot to make Geoff Hurst the player he became.

Bright had an enormous affect on Wrights career and lead the line exceptionally well.

Always felt that Peter Burridge would have been able to play at a higher level than he did for us,very underated.

Chris Armstrong did not seem to know just how good he was--went down in my view when he became star witness for Cantona.

My son watched Ian Wright play at Wokingham and came home to tell me about this fantastic player who was on trial,I always used to say that he could catch pidgeons, his pace was so important to him and he is the best in my view.

I reckon that if Ron Noades had shown greater ambition when we finished third he might have stayed a bit longer with us.

Seen most of the greats over 65 years but will nominate Byrne as his time was when pitches were truly grim and the boots and balls were solid. His skill was amazing and he was in the thick of things all the time. He was a poacher and provider.

Very sad end to his life with drink problems apparently. Rip.

I liked Kevin Mabbutt as well,as you say he was decent for that period considering some of the crap we had to bring in because we were skint, top scored with 8 if memory serves, I used to mark our scorers on my wall calender and we didn't get many so that seemed good at the time.

The best I saw is Wright, especially in partnership with Bright. I didn't see him in his super-sub days but I will never forget coming on as a sub in the '90 Cup Final and scoring a brace after breaking his leg twice and not had meaningful football since January.

I wonder if anyone here is old enough to have seen our top scorer, Peter Simpson, play.
