I think it's clear we are short up top, but with only one space in the 25 left and the need for a keeper and a striker I was wondering what our options for Bentekes backup are. They are in the order of how close they are in my opinion to the first team.

Most of the info is lifted straight from CPFC

Freddie Ladapo

By far the closest to the first 11. Big and powerful, it would take little adaptation to our style to swap him in for Benteke. Obviously not near the same level but he will get chances over the next few months and I hope he steps up

The Romford-born striker signed for the Eagles from Margate in March 2016 after impressing during a trial with the club's development team, where he netted a hat-trick against Watford.

Ladapo had started his career playing for Colchester United in League One where he spent four seasons, however the majority of which saw him out on loan learning his trade in non-league football.

27 goals spread across stints at Grays Athletic and Margate saw him come to Palace's attention, and after impressing for the second-string team he was handed a two-and-half year contract.

The attacker featured for the Palace first-team for the first time during the summer of 2016, including travelling with the squad for the tour of the USA and Canada, and made his first appearance against Philadelphia Union. He grabbed his first goal in a 3-2 friendly win against AFC Wimbledon and was named on the bench for Palace’s opening two Premier League games.

He then joined Oldham Atheletic on loan until the turn of the year, scoring three times in 22 games before switching to Shrewsbury Town where he fired in four goals in 15 games to help the Shrews beat the drop.

With that in mind, here are some of the options in the youth set up who may be fancying there chances at some game time.

Levi Lumeka

Although an attacking mid, he can play up top comfortably

After finishing top scorer for the academy side in 2015/16, Lumeka repeated the feat with the development side last term despite also spending time continuing to hone his skills with the under-18s. The pacy attacking midfielder is also strong on the ball, meaning he is capable of playing on the wing or up front as a striker.

Francis Baptiste

Lot of interest from the big teams in this youngster a year back

After finishing top scorer in the IFA Shield during the academy’s trip to India in the spring of 2016, the Oasis Academy member was handed a chance to shine at under-18 level, and ended his first full season in the side as top scorer.

His red-hot form also earned him a crack with the development team towards the end of the campaign, and he netted his first goal at that level against Queens Park Rangers to round off an impressive 12 months.

Victor Fundi

Lot of goals in the U18s. Not so much success in the U23s

The former Oasis Academy Shirley Park student has been a regular goalscorer for the acdemy side over the past couple of seasons, but is now looking to build on his six previous outings before this season for the development squad. A strong striker who can also trouble defences with his pace, Fundi is approaching a decade in the Eagles' youth ranks.

Hope this gives you guys a bit of info

It's been Freddie Ladapo as the backup striker in the last 2 pre-seasons, and he hasn't looked promising. I'd bet he won't have a career above League 1.

Benteke gets an injury and he will start almost every game until January or one of the senior strikers are fit.

Jason Lokilo was born in 1998 and played in the Asia trip, pretty good as I recall. He took most of the free kicks and corners. I'm not sure he could play on his own as a no 9 though.

Lapado seems the most obvious and a Vardy type, its try him or sell him time as he is over 21. Lokilo has the skills.

Baptiste (b 1999) promises much but probably a season away from a chance.

If needed I hope Ladapo can step up as it would give some hope to the other development players; however, it seems more likely that one of the first team would be played out of position.

What would be good would be to get a couple a head in a few games and bring him on for the last 20mins (Freddie Ladapo) and get him used to the big stage. Whilst at the same time wrapping Benteke up in cotton wall once his job is done.

Funnily enough, I've seen both Ladapo & Vardy play at non-league level and if it had been in the same season I'd have put money on Ladapo being more successful. He was much less one-dimensional than Vardy but I guess we'll never know if he can step up unless he gets a chance.

Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five!

Hopefully we'll get someone else on a free, but if not, I suspect we'll see someone like Zaha shoehorned in.

Blimey that's interesting. We need to take the risk of playing him, lets hope he doesn't let us down.

Parrot I saw the Schalke game and Lokilo took all corners and the majority of free kicks.
Ward was sub that day.
I thought Frank would of selected him against Huddersfield.
He didn't and then brought Ward in.
Has not recovered since.!!
