Some of my family fought against da brits. Some of my family were da brits. No more messed up than the average family. Many emigrated to the new world. General mistrust of politicians , flags, ideologies , religions and corporates. A fondness for booze , good food, and a lively conversation. A dislike for lazy scroungers, traffic jams, bureaucracy, bigotry, fundamentalism, ignorance. Nostalgic for living in caves and hunting mammoth.

My dad was a miner and then moved to London and was a docker. A lot of my relatives (many who have passed away due to the dust) came from the Rhondda and the tales I heard about how the wealthy mine owners treated the workers were shocking (and after researching when I was older were true). His mates on the docks were a weird mixture, very left wing in some ways and very right wing in other.

I should add that my mum died when I was very young so I was not really influenced by her politics but her family owned a big garage in Warlingham.

This has made me incredibly suspicious about employers as, if not reined in by certain regulation, I am sure, even today, they would exploit workers to gain more profits for themselves.

There is a flip side to this in the fact that I really do not like the pc stupidity that has happened in the last 20 years or so. My dad told jokes that would probably get him arrested these days and I told these at school and no-one objected. I hate the fact when anyone gets treated unfairly or not equally, that goes for men or women. I think I am quite left wing in most of my views but am edging right in some of them.

What do you think it was about your upbringing that made you convinced the Conservative side was right? You seem to infer that it was partly to do with the strength of feeling in your family, is that so? Where did it come from?

Correct it doesn't but I have met more than one or two dyed-in-the-wool Tories who are so because it gives them a perception of higher status. Snobs, in short, inverted or otherwise.

I generally avoid politics because it usually becomes more childish than I can cope with.

My politics are left wing because I was raised during the war years and despite what many believe to the contrary a lot of anti Churchill thoughts existed and a socialist government (Atlee)was almost a necessity to deal with so many issues.

I was very much aware of the hardship of being a child of virtual poverty which was also very influential to my life.

Despite being very involved in the capitalist system and holding a well paid managerial position I have always voted for my fellow man and woman...not personal gain.

Honesty which is in very short supply in politics tells me that neither side of the argument is correct.

By and large the wealthy obtain their riches on the backs of working men and women and despite comments to the contrary the class system defines this country.
