C.j. Sansom's Shardlake series - 7 books all excellent set in the time of Henry VIII and Cromwell.
For something a bit different in the 'supernatural/crime'
genre, try Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins series (a CofE female vicar who is also the Diocesan Exorcist) sounds a bit odd, but a brilliant writer.

Stephen King is the horror Master. Very detailed writing.
Also like James Herbert, who is quite a formatted horror writer. The hero fights an evil force, with some 5h@gging along the way. Very readable.

I tend to read more science-based books in my middle-age. Arthur C Clarke is a true science visionary and pioneer of ideas.
Stephen Hawking is the master of theories. Some of his works are incredibly tricky to get through. I would suggest "Black holes and baby universes" gives a user-friendly insight to the man and his theories
