Perhaps Cummings and IDS see themselves as Cromwellian characters as they both have round heads.

As long as our parliamentary representatives vote in accordance with their party manifesto

For the umpteenth +1 time MPs are not delegates. They can decide for themselves whether they accept all aspects of a party manifesto or whether, during the course of a Parliament, it remains the correct course of action.

There is no free speech in this country

Of course there is. There is total freedom of speech. UNDER THE LAW.

I used to but I'm not so sure any more

Then you risk falling foul of it.

You obviously do

I most certainly don't. I believe in Parliamentary democracy. But that's no the point. I asked if you did.

How many of the 'boat people' get jobs in UK then?

Interesting article by David Starkey I have previously compared the current situation in parliament to the era of Cromwell and it would appear that David Starkey is also drawing parallels.

Whilst Starkey has always had an odd view of history there have been many contributing historical factors which have resulted in the evolution of the Parliamentary system we have today.

It actually doesn't matter too much how we got here. What matters is that we did and that it works. It protects minorities. It separates the political leadership from the armed forces, so they can never be used against the people. It ensures that no PM can act against the will of Parliament as a whole. That governments govern only with the consent of Parliament ensures we cannot have a dictatorship.

We need to fervently protect this institution and not dump it in a ditch just to suit any particular political viewpoint.

I think there is still a legal way for Boris to avoid asking for an extension some of the papers have speculated that he will resign as PM.

I think this is how the idea would work:

Boris hangs on for as long as possible until the deadline for him to ask for an extension. At this point he resigns as PM but not as party leader.

The Tories decline to nominate a new PM.

Surely it would be at this point that a vote of no confidence would be called, which without a majority would certainly be lost by the Tories.

Whether Corbyn or a short term interim PM forms a new administration is an open question but it would happen, the extension applied for a GE held in October.

At least Jonson would not have asked for the extension!

Scripted "put downs" tested in focus groups for effectiveness are no way to run a democracy!

We are seeing a government run by personal advisers whose sole role is to find ways to get around the democratic will of Parliament.

No wonder that one cabinet member has already quit in disgust. How long before others follow and, if things start going obviously pear shaped, they throw Johnson under the bus, install Gove as interim PM, accept the instruction to extend, and call a GE. There are already mutterings being leaked!

I think most will agree that the sooner that everyone can see that the current Tory Party is in the process of morphing into a blue rinsed version of the Brexit Party the better, so the quicker the many decent "one nation" Tories detach themselves the better.

Which part of the government trying to honour the Referendum result don't you understand?

You are as daft as a box of frogs.

France has already said there will be NO extention!!

So then what do you suggest Wisbech? Cancel Brexit altogether?

The new commission takes over on 1st November and I don't think there is any perceived progress to justify further delay.
