I ask partly to see what folk think the priorities are, but also because I'm becoming increasingly doubtful that both can be achieved this summer. The season ends late, then the Euros will take place and that usually delays transfer activity (even if only due to the trickle down effect).

I presume any new players will at least want to know who their manager would be if they signed for us, and a new manager would want at least some say in recruitment, so we'd have to get the new manager in place pretty early. If we have to negotiate permission with Swansea and Burnley to talk to their managers ahead of an interview process then there literally might not be time to secure a manager and then new players afterwards, especially if Swansea are in the play offs.

And we're notoriously quick in the transfer market.

I just think any new manager worth his salt will have his own ideas about who he wants in and what he thinks the team needs to improve it.
So to me it makes no sense to extend Roy for a year and make the number of signings we will inevitably need only for a new guy to come in next year and want to change things. We have made initial investment in the squad in our early days back in the premier league (not year on year) but with the way things are at this particular point in time the additions we need might not cost the multi millions the once made might.
If we’re investigating in the squad and bringing in players it makes sense for that to be part of a bigger picture and longer term planning involving a new manager.
Maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

Just edited my post to say exactly that!

Makes perfect sense, but that's my point: can we really interview a shortlist of candidates, having got permission from their clubs, got that guy in the building, agreed targets with him, and also get a high number of signings done all in one shorter than usual summer?

Seems unlikely.

If Parish has agreed a deal with Howe then of course much of this falls away.

Seeing as the “Roy out” thread rumbles on. What manager would you think would want the job.

Someone did say on here “that there would be hundreds that would jump at the chance” . When asked who, he gave no reply...

Or not. The more I think about this the more I come to believe that the Board will offer Roy, if he's agreeable to it, a one year extension.

After the FdB debacle I think management will be even more risk adverse than usual and will opt to stick with Roy to get us over the contractual issues coming this summer. Can't impact the aging squad quickly but with a few additions of youth & some decent loans will go again next year into stay-up mode just to get over the hump with, hopefully, Roy leaving a younger, better team when he does ultimately retire.

I have no evidence for this. Just a feeling given how management have been operating over the last few years. So, at best, another year of defensive football playing it safe to stay up. Given the hole we have to crawl out of I don't think we can expect more than this.

Of course this could all change if the dream manager turns up on our stoop looking for work but what are the odds of that?

It wouldn't surprise me if Hodgson was offered another year. If we get the right few youngsters and loan players, we may see Hodgson place a bit more emphasis on attack as he did in his first couple of years (51 league goals in 2018/19 and 10 in the cups).

Perhaps the club DO wish Mr Hodgson to continue in his role but he is undecided as to whether he wishes to sign a new contract ! Perhaps he might conclude that it is the right time to 'Bow out' after so many years in football and this will enable him to spend more time with his dear wife Sheila.
They do celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this year!

There is an alternative scenario of course. All might be revealed soon.

Why do you not refer to her as Mrs Hodgson, Willo? Asking for a friend who I was speaking to earlier.

Roy will be offered another year deal what it will come down to is if he wants to continue which he has stated he has no plans to stop yet but will talk to the club at the end of the season.

I don't like this it's not good for the club if they do need to go in new direction with a manager they wont come in until its too late with so many players out of contract as well this is selfish of Roy.

Not really sure who would really be that interested no top manager is going to take the job unless suddenly SP etc have sold up and gone which we know that guy wont do that.

In some ways I would like to see Roy just retire other ways I want him to go to a club with better players and lets see how he sets them up from looking back at all his past he knows one way only which is fine to keep you in a league but its so dull also he doesn't have a clue how to use players they have to fit into his system.

I will say that I struggle to think of anyone realistic that I'd be entirely happy with. That could change at more or less anytime with the job security of managers these days. Totally unrelated: just saw Sorloth nearly score!

That won’t be the last time nearly and Sorloth are used in the same sentence.

Can you explain why it is selfish of a person to want to stay working in the job he loves doing for as long as he can, when he can still do it better than most people ?

With players coming back from injury and 3 week break on the horizon I have every hope that we will have a strong finish to the season and if that is the case Roy should be offered a new deal
