Crystal Palace are mathematically safe from relegation after a 1-0 victory away to West Ham United.

It was Palace's fifth straight win - and the first time they achieved this in the top flight since December 1992.

The Eagles had the first clear-cut chance of the game as Kagisho Dikgacoi's header was cleared off the line by Andy Carroll.

A nice corner kick move saw Adrian Mariappa's driven shot blocked on the chest by a diving Kevin Nolan before West Ham appealed for a penalty after Mile Jedinak clashed with Carroll in the box.

West Ham ended the half strongly with Mohamed Diame having a shot pushed over by Julian Speroni, then the keeper produced another top save to claw out Carroll's header.

After the interval, Carroll blazed wide of the goal, while Jason Puncheon felt he was blocked in the area by Hammers defender Pablo Armero as he ran in the box.

Just before the hour mark, Palace got the breakthrough with a penalty as Armero clipped Cameron Jerome just inside the area as he cut in by the byline. Jedinak smashed home the kick for his first goal of the season.

Seven minutes later, Palace had successive opportunities to shot on goal in the box as frantic West Ham defence were all at sea and Puncheon fired off target.

Sub Carlton Cole hit a shot over near the end as West Ham struggled to find a way past the strong Palace rearguard.
