The money we spent on Franca and Henderson doesn't look like it wisely spent, but the lack of ideas, tactics, formations is down to Roy and he is not getting the most of what we have, and we know he is going at the end of the season, and i can only believe the choice of new manager isn't available or surely he would be appointed.

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

I have believed that Ozoh has the attributes for some time. When he comes on he looks better than Hughes.
Franca too - looks better than Ahamada and different but perhaps better than Schlupp. The other one is that if Imray is worse than Ward or Clyne, he may as well give up now. I'd also like to see Ademarola again but believe he's been injured.

As for the youngsters in general, we have plenty who play for their England age groups. We really should be at least on a par with most of the other Premier League clubs.

Roys methods are not in touch with the modern game. Blocking defenders and standing with your back pushing into the keeper are commonplace these days but our players looked as if they had never seen it before. Roy should have been making our players aware of this but he clearly didnt as he hasn't all season at set pieces

Thing is, Roy’s tactics are ancient. He only knows how to play the Roy draw way. Never mentally conditions his team for a win, and it shows on players attitude (apart from Zaha who had so much self belief and drive)
Roy’s tenure at Liverpool and the England national team puts paid to any defence of not having access to talent. Period.

Concur. Game has evolved. Also with 5 subs, creative managers can add make on the fly changes to dimensions of play that a ridged, turgid manager can’t recognize or keep up with.
Those Arsenal set pieces were American football inspired with blockers, tacklers and all. Knowing full well that any fowling that’s called only gives Arsenal a chance to set up their defence. On the other hand if no foul is given then it’s a goal. A rare low risk high reward arrangement

Last season Mr Hodgson had Zaha,Eze and Olise at his disposal, the football played was quite refreshing and surprised many who viewed the manager tactically as more conservative.

This season of course Zaha is in Turkey and Olise and Eze have hardly played together. There has also been the loss of Doucoure.

I will accept that only 2 home wins all season and only 1 win in our last 11 games is cause for wailing and lamentation.

The OP has entitled the thread "Don't Blame Roy!). Well I do blame him for what is in his area of control, namely, how he coaches the squad and how he sets us up to play.

He wonders how we always seem to start slowly (and concede the first goal - as I've said elsewhere, something we did more than any other PL team in 2023). Well if your first aim is always to try and stop the other team from scoring instead of trying to score the first goal yourself, what do you expect will happen?

As has been said by many, we are useless in both penalty areas when there are corners. Setting up defensively will (and usually does) result in conceding more corners than under a more progressive system. The game against Arsenal encapsulated this perfectly.

Our full backs seem to have little idea what to do with throw-ins other than (usually) give the ball to the opposition. Rarely do we see quick throw-ins from our players or players moving quickly to find space to receive the ball.

We have one of the worst shot-to-goal conversion rates in the PL.

And what is Hodgson's answer?

"Keep working on what we do in practice lads".

Sorry, his methods are well past their sell-by date IMHO. Football has moved on and it's time he did - into retirement.

Finally, YES, the board has much to answer for but that doesn't let Hodgson off the hook.

Good call - I agree

The Bournemouth comparison is a good one, especially as they play the same formation as us - 4231, and are doing a lot better.

When you look at their team there are only a few i would have in front of what we have at Palace - CF, RB and LW spring to mind.
And of course we took their player of the year last season.

So clearly we have under performed in comparison.

In terms of their net spend, this is a little misleading as their 2 big purchases - Adams and Scott were both injured when they signed and haven't had an impact this season.

Their success is built on a mobile top 4. Many of their purchases have been in the £10m area, exactly our price range.
Kluivert, Semenyo and Tavernier were all in that price range.

Aarons is a busy little RB, similar to a younger Clyne. He cost about £7m i think and Sinisterra was bought on loan.

Instead we bought an untried teenager from Brazil for an excessive amount and surely even the biggest Roy hater would not say the kid should be starting for us in the Prem.

I do not blame Roy for having a thin squad at all - that is down to those above him.
However, he should be able to do better with what he has at his disposal in my opinion.
He plays too negatively, we don't pass the ball quickly enough, there isn't enough movement, we don't look fit enough and don't get me started on set pieces.
It cannot be beyond a man who has managed over 1,000 games not to have a plan - can it?
We also do not seem to have the passion that we once had - other than in a few of them - to help us through games either.
It is very disappointing and it is my belief that someone - anyone - else would get more out of the squad that we currently have available.
Roy is now past his sell by date and it is sad that it has to come to this but something has to be done - we are sleepwalking into relegation.
I don't actually mind going down to be honest - the big names will leave anyway, so we might as well take the hit, get some money in and start again!

Agree, however, the real positive in that period was that Zaha barely featured.

He was subbed before HT in the first game v leicester (at 0.0), came back for West Ham and Spurs and then was injured again v Bournemouth just after HT, albeit after a great set up for our first goal. So in those 10 games he essentially played 3 x 90 minutes.
This proved Palace could win and score without Zaha. Unfortunately it appears the BOD thought they could replicate this for the whole of 2023/24!!

Doucoure is a key loss.
It's no coincidence that neither Anderson not Guehi look as assured in his absence playing just in front of them.
Doucoure was also the launchpad for playing out from the back playing simple 15-20 yard forward passes to move us up the field.
We continually lose possession in his absence and can't build momentum.
Roy has tried Richards to play the role, but Richards doesn't have the necessary attributes.
Roy doesn't seem to trust Hughes or Lerma to play the Doucoure role (perhaps justifiably).
Therefore, my question to Roy would be if nobody can play the Doucoure role in the squad, why not try a different approach?
For example, play more directly, try 2 up front, play 442,get players in the box when the opportunity is there, work on set pieces.
Don't shoehorn players out of position just so you can adopt the same coaching methods as if Doucoure was available.
It's not working.
