I pointed out earlier that the definition of persistent infringement in Law 12 includes persistent infringement by a team. It deals with a situation where a team's players take it in turns to foul a single player (e.g. Wilf) and provides for the ref to card the fourth player to foul him in a short space of time even though the previous fouls were committed by other players.

Have a look here

[Link]

in particular from post 17 onwards and the reference to David Elleray's advice.

So when Willo said

'A "Persistent infringent" caution is based at an individual player NOT a collective foul count across the team and there is no specific number that equates to it.'

... he was talking bollocks.

Thanks for the update, seems like our resident 'authority' on refereeing needs to catch up on the rules.

My next question was gonna be, hasn't the ref got any tools in his arsenal to stop a team fouling on average every 3 minutes. But i think you answered the question.

He clearly has the tools at his disposal but for some reason didn't want to use them.

The club IMO really needs to call the PL out on this on going issue, I can not imagine for the life of me we'd get away with doing this to Man City.

Especially as you have kindly pointed out there are laws in place to punish teams doing it.

[quote=David Elleray] Referees have always been told to look out for a team tactic where different players foul the same opponent.

The advice is that the captain is warned then the next player can be cautioned not for persistent misconduct but for unsporting behaviour.

Very easy call the captain over and say next foul in the next five minutes gets a yellow. So simple, especially as he has the 'authority' to do it!

There are no "Rules" there are "Laws".
And I have highlighted the relevant "Law" as documented on the FA website.

But clearly there are those who believe that "Persistent infringement" cautions are issued after a set number of fouls committed across the team.I am happy to inform you otherwise.

So the "Next foul" is committed by a player who hasn't committed a foul before and he gets issued a "Yellow" based on the number of fouls committed by the team ?
Good luck with that one.

It seems that you are unable or unwilling to answer a straight question with a simple yes or no answer so for that reason I am out!!!

How come the team wasn't warned for unsporting behavior and booked for that instead?

Surely that's the relevant rule/law you should be informing us about.

I have responded to a number of the points on here and set the record straight about the Law relating to "Persistent infringement".

Seemingly some believe that after a set number of fouls either the whole team should be booked or the player who commits the next foul should be booked even if this was his first foul.Ridiculous.

How ironic that you used the word "Tripe" given the content of your post.

Unsporting behavior - look it up.

It can be used at the discretion of the referee to caution a player when he believes the team is targeting a player and rotating the fouls.

But you knew this from your training, right?

You seriously suggesting that a player can be booked for "Unsporting beahaviour" for his first foul based on the fact that this followed a series of fouls spread across the team ?
