Our captain in the best of times and the worst of times. How he felt playing in front of 30,000 to 45,000 crowds quite regularly at Selhurst to 4,500 ones in the final years of his Palace career one can only have a decent guess. A few of us were with him all the way 1972 to 1987 (I think that was his last season) Happy Birthday you moustachioed permed legend! One cap was a crime- though we did have a very good team in the seventies and early 80's if we ignore 1978 when something happened though I still haven't found out what? JC 60. Doesn't seem possible. But a great, great player and the best goal I ever saw! Palace had just been promoted and were sitting top of the league eith a team made 90% of our 'own' kids. Ipswich, Bob by Robson, for 5/7 years the second best team in the land. Palace won 4-0 and the best goalo. no4, saw the ball played out of defence by JC. He kept running, immaculate through ball by Jerry (Spud) Murphy down the wing to Paul (Doris)Hinchelwood. He crosses in to JC running through and he hits it first time. From then on Palace never went any further. Samson went to Arsenal as a swop for Clive Allen, Terry Fenwick didn't adjust to the vacant position quickly enough, although he went on the be England'd defender (marked Marradona in the hand of god match). Palace sold half the stadium to Sainsburys and my Dad wrote to protest that Palace were not now going to become one of the 'big' names. We know now don't we. JC was the last present from Bert Head who played him as a youngster at home to Chelsea. He Scored in front of 45,000. Wow they were the days!

The headlines in the Sunday Papers were "The Eagles Have Landed" as we were top of the league.

A Palace stalwart , and we don't get many of them these days ( Julian excepted). The two stand-out memories of big Jim for me are his debut goal against Chelsea in 1973, and, inevitably, that goal against Ipswich. A great servant to the club.
