I spent some time today with a friend of my wife’s and her husband, who is a PL assistant referee. He was working yesterday and got back from his match late so had not seen the highlights of the Palace game. He was though very aware of the 2 sending off incidents.

He confirmed that VAR cannot get involved in yellow card decisions other than in cases of mistaken identity.

He knows our players, and those of all the clubs, and made some interesting observations which, regrettably I must not share.

Sorry, it’s not intentional but his job depends on him being discreet. The various restrictions placed on him are quite surprising. I suppose it’s such a big money business these days that they are ultra careful.

VAR has a way to go before it improves the game. As does offside flagging etc.
Also, when someone goes down with a head injury, unless they are unconscious, should be immediately removed from the pitch for a mandatory 15 minutes and given treatment off the pitch and a sub can come on until they return.
That way we would see a lot less head injuries.

Classic example would be Mitrovich yesterday.

And if the moon were made of cheese. There are no fine lines about it, for the last two games they were totally abysmal, not one shot on target in two games, fine lines.

I would imagine SP was (as much as anything) trying to "manage expectations" he can hardly sit there saying much else without the prospect of it coming back to bite him on the bum at a later date - in a transfer window there is a lot that can happen to a plan, however well thought out it may be -

Also - I think we should remember that he gave that interview several days before the Fulham game (we were 19 points from 14 games) whereas we are thinking about it / posting after the train wreck that was the Fulham game -

Perhaps it is just "corporate speak" whereby the man at the top talks things up even if underneath it he is fully aware of the deficiencies. I hope that is the case.

I believe he is trying to protect his weak ankle, hence why he was not in the friendly games. I clearly see at times he holds back, he should have done in the sending off tackle.
BUT Ive seen worse tackles in the PL that didnt event get a caution specially players at LFC!!
Personally yes I agree some players, not only our club, come back traumatised it would appear, from England camps..

I think we need a new 1st choice left back and centre mid. Tyrick has regressed alarmingly since his England call up. Not physical enough and his often caught out of position plus offers little going forward plus he's not that quick either. He is 23 now so people saying he's still learning are wrong, he should have his game in order by now. I'd rather have PVA back he couldn't do any worse
