dont be such a racist pr*ck! First off, my family come from Cootehill in County Cavan, I won't divulge my Surname on here but it's as Oirish as the blarney Stone. Secondly being Irish is not a "race", arguably being of Celtic decent could be classed as race, but even that has been called into question of late. I think you may have meant me Xenophobic, but seeing as I visit Ireland a lot and have Irish family I don't really think so. The basis of my comment was laid in the indifference (at best) or the active support (at worst) of Eire and it's people of the Nazis, Churchill's nemesis if you like. So with tongue firmly in cheek I poked fun at the opinions of a Irish person on Churchill. Consider your self educated. Pr1ck Definitely an oirsh surname. That's sgt oirish surname to you son.

Churchill was a genius strategic leader for our country in one of it's most perilous times and he had the guts to fight courageously against one of the world's most evil powers in modern history. Not only did he unite the entire country (imagine trying to do that now), but stood for good vs evil. If you oppose the good side in a pure good vs evil fight, then what does that make you? Mussolini ?

Churchill was a genius strategic leader for our country in one of it's most perilous times and he had the guts to fight courageously against one of the world's most evil powers in modern history. Not only did he unite the entire country (imagine trying to do that now), but stood for good vs evil. If you oppose the good side in a pure good vs evil fight, then what does that make you? About the only thing they had in common was Unity Mitford. I wouldn't say that Churchill was necessarily a good man, but he always hated fascism.

I'll never have a go at the Irish people for the war. Too many Irish fought and died fighting on our side for that. Also our armies are packed full with Irish and Irish descent. But I will have a go at their terrible government and their dishonourable political stand during the war. They sat on the fence and didn't defend democracy. Many Irish individuals did however and came back to be shunned by their government. Disgraceful and dishonourable government. Edited by Stirlingsays (24 May 2013 6.55pm)

I haven't either and you raise a good point about his undeniable ability to unite people behind the cause. How could you oppose him then? My Grandad (who fought at Dunkirk all the way through to Korea and I suppose should have respected him) hated the man. I never found out why. It's always stayed with me though that the only opinion I heard from someone who was alive back then was a negative one. I don't know if anyone on here who remembers him in office could help me out with that one and whether that was an odd view or widely held. I mean, I find it weird that he got booted out at the next election if he was so adored.

I think the Labour landslide of 1945 indicates that the men who'd spent five years having bits of hot metal flying at them and watching their mates die were not going home to deal with the crap they'd put up with in the Thirties.

The Irish Gov - not being a bit thick and gullible at all - took Hitler at his word that they could unite the island once he'd subjugated the pesky British I believe. Hence, their ambivalence towards certain things the Nazis got up to around their shores. Enemies enemy and all that. Lucky for them that we did for The Hun otherwise they'd all be speaking in a way that can be really difficult to understand

The reason they were shunned by their government was because the country could of been invaded at any moment by the UK or Germany. You have to remember that it was such as short time after the Irish War and that the party in power at the time lost the civil war. They blamed Churchill for the civil war. However, I think he was a leader and if it were not for him, there would of been serious morale problems during the war. Edited by corkery (24 May 2013 10.01pm)
