Why has no one gone for Austin? Can't just be the price, some team would have paid it, there must be another reason and that's why I'm not sure he's the right decision. On a free, no brainer, but 8-10m too high for me.

If you believe that Austin is a genuine, 15 goals a season scorer in the Premier League then 8-10 million is chump change in today's market. There are a lot of reasons why I prefer other players to Austin but that price is not one of them.

A while back a Hoops fan told me his wages were obscene & that his agent wanted a huge fee for both him & CA when it came to a transfer.

If that's true, even in part, then I'd have thought his agent would prefer to wait until his contract was up to boost the fees etc

Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five!

We need a striker. Wickham will come good but in terms of depth we need two target men competing for that place up top. Chamakh can play there but with punch slightly erratic form wise id imagine pards would rather he played behind a front man.

Gayle is ok but scores goals alongside a target man. He isn't the answer if wickham gets injured (clutching his hamstring Saturday didn't look good). We rumoured to be after some imports from abroad which is fine but they can be hit and miss.

With Austin you can tell immediately he'd fit into our system. Physically he can play that target man role up front and goal scoring wise he proved himself last year in a struggling side.

15m in August was too much. Now his fee will come down considerably. He wants to stay down south and quite frankly, sitting 6th in the league makes us considerably more attractive than when he was pondering a move to selhurst in August.

Personally, if the money is right I think we'd be mad not to go on for Austin one more time.

I am coming round to this view. I've never wanted Austin but given our present situation, I'm becoming more sympathetic to the point of view that he might be a good idea. Re: your points...

1. Totally agree that (if fit) a front three of Austin, Wickham, and Chamakh would provide quality competition for places and diverse options up front as none of the three are identical players. BTW, I think Wickham is already coming good at a rapid pace.

2. Generally, I would prefer a "local" striker (or a striker with local knowledge) to an import. Zaza doesn't really send me into raptures, for instance.

3. Austin, because of the nature of his game, would really fit into any side. He'd be well suited to us, frankly.

4. You are 100% right about price. And I suspect in his eyes, now we're in 6th place, we've proved our worth to him making us far more attractive than we were in August. This is one reason I think the deal might happen.

I still have my reservations about Austin (as much based on personality and agent issues as football) but right now, I could be persuaded that at 8m or so, he'd be a good move. Especially if we could offload Gayle or Campbell to QPR into the bargain.

1. There is no way we will pay top dollar for Austin based on a) He is near the end of his contract b) has question marks over his potential for injury c) Has the risk of being a 'one season wonder' at the top level.

2. Austin isn't as sought after as QPR, he or the media would have you believe - Have it from good authority that last year there was actually very little 'concrete' interest in Austin bar some tentative enquiries

3. Does Austin actually fit our transfer profile and the sort of player we are looking to bring in - I'd suggest not.

I think a Remy or someone out of left field from abroad is far more likely than Austin to be honest

What is "top dollar" though? I think the fact that he is at the end of his contract is largely a red herring, you either want a player or you don't. Is £8 Million a lot for what is pretty much a proven player? I don't think so. If his name was Carlos Austin a lot of fans would be wetting their pants.

I wasn't keen at the start of the season but I have changed my mind for two reasons.

i) We are doing considerably better than I envisaged

ii) £8 Million is not much of a gamble.

I am not sure that the "injury prone" label he has picked up is particularly fair either

Where is this fee coming from ? Bids of £12 million were quoted in the summer. Another thread mentioned that £9 million had been offered for Gayle ? Off load one for the other might be a possibility, altho I can't see this transfer happening as supposedly Austin rejected us in the summer, then again we weren't 6th in the league then. Personally I'd like to see an Ighalo type of striker. He has looked mightily impressive coming straight from the Championship which is rare these days. Wickham could play the Deeney type role and with our wingers we would annhilate most defences.

The reason is he can easily leave at the end of the season for free which with every month is a bigger risk and as such the club will probably take less why 8 I don't know though

The other side of the coin is that he is a proven goalscorer in the PL and there are plenty of desperate teams in the lower reaches willing to fling the cash.

The maths is pretty simple. Sell him in January for 6-8 million quid.

Keep him until May and lose him for 0 quid.

If QPR really believe they are odds on for promotion then he is arguably worth keeping because minus 8 million quid is small change compared to the riches they would get if they went up.

If they are honest and believe promotion this year is unlikely, they are better off selling him while they can still bring some money in. If they think they can get a replacement into the bargain (Gayle, Campbell) even more so.

The only bar to a sale in January is Austin himself. If he holds out until May when he becomes a free agent, he will get a large chunk of the 8 million quid that would have been a transfer fee as a signing-on fee from his new club. That's the way it works. So it boils down to does Austin want money (in which case he refuses to move in January) or success (in which case he goes.) I guess the answer will tell us something about him.

Am I mad in not wanting him?

You can see when Wickham plays, we look far better in the final third, purely down to how he harasses and holds up the ball.

Austin can't do that, so I'd be inclined to look for a different type of striker (more akin to Wickham, Murray etc).

You forget one thing,Austin puts the ball in the net on a regular basis.
I am staggered that alot of people on here are against this signing but football is a game of opinions
