Paying for Cabaye

Sell - Guediora (£2m), Bannan (£2m), Williams (very sadly)(£2m)

Clyne Sell On Fee - (£2.5m)

CPFC 10 - (£1.5m rising to £4.5m)

Wages

From three player sales - £50k pw released

CPFC 10 - £50k pw.

So for a potential net outlay of up to £4.5m in transfer fees (assuming all three above are sold) and £50k pw in wages extra (£100k pw) - we get a quality player.

Just my thoughts.

I don't think Williams is going anywhere, except maybe on loan.

mayday?

If Cabaye comes in, is that the end for Jedinak? Suggestions that Jedinak was unhappy at the club.

Far far far from the truth. He absolutely loves Palace and would never leave unless the club sold him. Words from his mouth.

Let's be realistic, in the current climate Cabaye is a £100,000 a week player and we can't avoid paying that sort of wage unless we want to move to the next level. The alternative is we take a massive gamble on an unproven talent who steps up to the plate straight away, which is risky at best. Market forces dictate that if demand for proven, established top 10 internationals outstrips supply then bullets have to be bitten if we are to build on what the board and Pardew have done, and their vision for the club.
It's a massive statement of intent by the club. It indicates to other high profile targets (Austin, Remy et al) that we are serious about kicking on and challenging for Europe.
It also indicates to the likes of Dann and Bolasie (I for one think that Dann would be crazy to leave now)that this could be a chance to do something very special with this club. IF he goes to Everton he will just plod along, be solid and finish mid-table for the next few years- I doubt he will become an Everton legend- but he could well be if he stays here. I genuinely think we have more potential with the squad we have (even before we add one or two quality players) than any team outside the top 6- and I'm generally one of the more pessimistic Palace fans!
If we can add a 20+ striker and a long-term partner for Dann Europe really isn't out of our reach.
And if we can consolidate for the next couple of years we MUST increase capacity or move. The catchment area for the club has to be one of the highest in Europe, never mind England.

I agree with all of this apart from the legend part - players will normally always go where the money is and where they will get exposure to game time and better football, so doubt he would care much about losing the chance of being a Palace legend if he doubles his salary. What is correct is that if we get this Cabaye deal over the line, it makes a statement to our players that we are going upwards which means more bonus money, better contracts, better international call-up prospects. Also if we can close this deal early this week, I think it will raise our image and profile massively meaning it will be easier to convince others to sign (e.g. Austin)

The fact it is on the BBC suggests it is very near to done.

They aren't the average tabloid fare of reporting rumours. Normally if it is on there the deal is either as good as done or can only be hijacked.

As far as I am concerned, it's not speculation any more: we have had a bid accepted and we have agreed personal terms in principal. Yes someone could still gazump us but think it would be unlikely now.

Cabaye - even if it is for the reported £100k a week (which would be a lot more than I would hope we would be paying) - represents a massive statement of intent from the club about where we want to go. And the fact that he is willing to come here - a man who was expecting to be playing champions league football this season - shows that we have a burgeoning reputation.

Yes it's a lot of money. Yes it's a bit of a gamble. But he is a quality player and it is genuinely very exciting.

Agree with you. For SP & AP to persuade a player of Cabaye's type to sign for Palace is a huge achievement and shouldn't be understated. Of course there's risks but a calculated one and the wages whilst appear huge, SP doesn't do anything that puts the club's future in danger so we can rest assured the club can afford it and any other incoming signings.

Amazing times...about to sign the best player we have ever signed. Who would have thought that after Hillsborough

No,no,no...that honour goes to Greenwich Borough in 1985 for the cost of some sheet metal and some football kit and the £100 a week wages offered to a certain Mr I Wright.

I know what you are saying but Cabaye may be crap for us. Time will tell.

The new TV money kicks in in 14 months. That's the gamble here and what is paying for a three year contract. Cabaye is gonna cost us nearly £30mill.

I've got to the point where I don't really care if he signs or not. If we have agreed a fee with PSG but he still hasn't signed that suggests to me that he would rather play for a bigger club and we don't want anyone playing for us who isn't 100% committed to the cause.

The significance of us beating Swansea on the last day and clinching 10th should not be underestimated. It makes us look - as a top-half club and with an improved league position on the year before - a much more attractive proposition. It seems silly but 11th or 12th and we may have been nowhere near Cabaye. The psychological advantage of saying 'we're a top-half club' is important.

I agree to an extent but I also believe that some players (not many, granted) are motivated by more than money. There appears to be a really great team spirit at the club right now, Dann is living in undoubtedly the greatest city on earth and he certainly isn't guaranteed to even get in to the Everton side. Jagielka and Stones are surely first choice up there at the moment? And as I said before, with the addition of Cabaye and maybe two others (partner for Dann and a 20+ striker) we will finish above Everton- so success also has to be a factor for him, surely?
As for the money, this is something I've never quite understood and maybe someone can enlighten me- why sell arguably your best player, only to have to fork out as much, if not more money to replace him with someone as good AND on higher wages? Why not just renegotiate his contract NOW so that Everton (and anyone else) will know that they're flogging a dead horse?

It's funny, I went along to the game not even really thinking about a top half finish. If I am honest (and shoot me down in flames for this) I didn't really think it'd happen as we needed results in our favour too so I pretty much rode out 90 minutes just enjoying a game that in my mind didn't mean much. The bloke next to me showed me the Spurs-Everton score on his phone and I must've looked stupid with my "so what?" look on my face. But now, looking back, as you've said above this was massive. I think there'll be a lot of truth in the fact that 10th place could really make us a decent prospect for some bigger named players (e.g.: Cabaye). For me it's one of the reasons I hope we do spend a big (although sensible) amount of money while we have this 'top half club' status.

Thing is though Kerms if we go down its hardly likely we wont shift Cabaye in the transfer market sharpish with a good sell on - he's no Andy Dorman or Owen Garvan

Sky Bet has suspended bets on Cabaye signing for Crystal Palace after a flurry of large bets on odds as short as 1/10.

Update

Sky Sources are telling us that France international Yohan Cabaye is on the verge of joining Crystal Palace from PSG.

So exciting!!
