Just an occasion for a load of Plastic Paddies to come out of the woodwork and start banging on about how they have an Irish great-great-great grandf*cker. And Guinness is liquid sh*t.

I hereby attach my name to the 'Celebrate St. George's Day' campaign.

Wasn't St George French?

It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Turkish, I think. In much the same way that St. Patrick was Scottish.

Actually I celebrate All Saints day - I take Liam Gallagher's missus and give her a right seeing to.

Who St George was and where he came from aint the issue here. The majority of Irish people celebrate Irishness on St Patrick's day not St Patrick himself, they celebrate their country and their culture and that's what many of us Englishmen crave and deserve, our own day of national pride, our own 4th of July if you like, the problem is saint days are a Catholic thing and that's why as a nation we don't officially celebrate St George's day being a protestant country, so the obvious answer would be that we're granted a day to celebrate Englishness - for once - they could call it heritage day or something and St George's day (April 23rd) would be an ideal and fitting date to do just that, but it'll never happen of course, coz it's illegal to be English and proud!

If saints days are a catholic thing, why are most protestant (CofE) churches named after one, and why do they celebrate their patronal festival (name day) on their saints day? except for churches dedicated to All Saints who just have theirs on 1st November (All Saints Day).
How about a hol online St. Georges celebration.

Well saints are sort of religious geezers aint they, they're in the bible and that and protestant churches are sort of fairly religious gaffs, so I spose... HOW THE BLUE BLAZES WOULD I KNOW?
Maybe Rach or WWJD could fill us in on the doings of the church of England.

Henry V? Top man! Shakespeare? Pah!

GIVE US BACK ST GEORGE'S DAY

April twenty-three's the date,
There won't be any pubs stay open late,
You won't find dancing in the street,
And nobody moves to a common beat.
The council they don't wanna know,
The last world-war was so long ago,
They don't want nationalistic pride,
And all complaints they'll brush aside.
When it comes, nobody knows,
I doubt you'll even see an English rose,
You won't see any flying flags,
Thanks all those Billy Braggs.
Tell me when it's gonna end,
It's just too mad to comprehend,
Why can't we drink and celebrate?
For old St George he's our patron saint!

A Retaliator classic!

As a point of interest, Shakespeare was born on, and died on, St. George's Day.
