They couldn't control the border with 10,000 soldiers. The Common Travel Agreement is around for much longer.

I certainly agree that it should be. However if you use the logic of the Brexiters, control of our own borders, then it would be foolish to ignore the fact that depending who is in power, it could have potential consequences in Ireland.

Perhaps they should then say that 'we will have a points style system, but one that is different to the Australian one' rather than 'like the Australian one' just to make it crystal clear.

I think this is just semantics. You can have a "system" or "policy" and set the entry criteria as you see fit.

We already have an immigration policy:

EU white people: come on through. Job or not
Others: Sorry, you're brown/black/yellow/green - what the hell are you thinking coming here?

It's not fit for purpose.

This with bells on it!

The shame I feel here when I ask people if they have ever planned to study or live in the UK and they tell me they'd like to but feel its a waste of time as getting a visa is too stressful. Some of them often tell me that Australia and Canada have much simpler systems of immigration.

Can someone explain why Northern Ireland not being in the EU is dangerous? What difference does it make to Ireland and Northern Ireland and the invisible border?

Can we not check passports of flight and boat passengers from both Rep Of Ireland and Northern Ireland coming into England, Wales, Scotland?

What are they expecting? Flights to Rep Of Ireland and then dinghy travel from there to England or Wales?

Very well stated.

That's what I'd like to have written but apathy kicked in. The debate is just farcical, on both sides.

And I'm someone who has wanted a vote on this, since I could vote.

This.

Two sets of self interested, insincere, lying and generally odious individuals or groups, misleading, extrapolating and manipulating to serve their own ends and for all they are worth.

Soundbite politicking at its absolute worst.

For me a simple 'in / out' choice is a flawed basis to vote on something so complex anyway.

Dangerous? Probably not but it has the potential to cause problems.

Ireland and UK relationship is complex, just look at the whole dual citizenship for example.

Also companies based in both the north and south view Ireland commercially as one big single company. My parent company is an insurance company and from their Dublin office provide over across the whole of Ireland as if it is one company. This is replicated across many industries.

Also a fair few people commute from one country to the other.

It's ok people quoting that we have had agreements predating the EU but the world has moved on and again I will make the point: Brexiters are playing heavily on the right to control borders, surely that must include Ireland where there are already stories (I don't know if true) of people heading there to by pass calais

The entire thing is just irritating me now, I can't wait for it all to be over.

In other news the French are on strike.
Really they are bound to say things like this,if we vote out it will be the start of the house of cards crumbling.
And they know it.

I see the EU as a bit like FIFA.
The sooner they realise it has failed and start a new organisation the better it will be for all the interested parties... Except that is, for the ones who are still riding the gravy train at our expense.

And they / you know it. Hmm where have I heard that before?

Also, you are mixing metaphors. Do cards crumble or tumble? Bring the whole edifice crumbling down would be suitable.

But you're probably right, possibly a bit of gamesmanship from our friend from the fatherland.

Yep. hardly mentioned in our media though is it. Poor old Hollande isn't being very socialist denigrating workers rights is he. Interesting times for the left in France.
