It's pretty difficult to post a response without saying anything, although I acknowledge some here do try hard.

I also acknowledge I was directing my remarks to another post, so it made no sense and for that I apologise.

Whether your post remains here though to be answered is not in my gift. It does seem to me to break a few of the rules!

It's a walkover of truth v lies but the defeated refuses to lie down. This isn't 52 v 48 it's 100 v 0.

But some on here wouldn't accept that as a clear mandate

My sense of humour is perfectly fine. I just don't find much to laugh about here. Much more here makes me feel very sad at how so many know so little about our democracy and how it works. It's all very sad.

To be fair no-one is forcing you to read this thread or contribute in anyway. I personally find it sad that you feel that all those that voted to leave aren't very bright , are right-wing extremists and your views are the only ones worth having

If it was a referendum result then it wouldn't be.

It would just be an overwhelming indication of what the electorate thought about a particular subject on a particular day. At the risk of being accused of repetition, the electorate don't give mandates. They elect representatives to take decisions for them. Such a result would though be very difficult to ignore and for the Parliament to survive the next election.

Right. So politicians are our delegates and do as we instruct them and referenda are 100% binding.
Ok, got it.

No-one is forced to read my posts either. There are many now who I cannot be bothered with.

You are quite wrong though. I don't feel that ALL those who voted leave aren't very bright or are right wing extremists or, indeed that only my views matter. As a democrat I believe that every view matters and that we have a duty to express it at every GE.

I do though think that it is most likely that anyone who could be regarded as a "right-wing extremist", or even on the hard right, would vote to leave. It seems in their DNA to think that the EU is an evil empire of socialists determined to create a European super state.

However that doesn't cover many people who decided to vote to leave. I know lots of folk who did and they are all decent, intelligent and nice people who are my friends. Their reasons were varied, but worries about immigration featured a lot in the beginning, but less so now. A lot were influenced by the claims about what we could do with the "money we would save". The most powerful though seemed to be that old chestnut that anything must be better than this. The idea that any change is better than no change has been a strong political motive for a long time. Sure some like to hang on to the status quo, and fear change, but in the run up to the referendum the idea that we could dump "otherness" and return to the good old days before austerity seemed louder to me, especially within the older age groups.

Of course I disagreed with them, and still do, but that doesn't mean I think any the less of them. Many don't take as much interest in politics as I do and rely on their daily dose of the Telegraph, Express, Sun or Mail to get their "information".

The wonderful Dr David Starkey on the behaviour of parliament.

He deals directly with the delegates v representatives question.
