I think the irony for the EU is that post this Corona virus there could be a real public appetite for a buy European campaign. Must admit I am planning on returning to Nokia for my mobile phone needs and will be doing my best not to buy any more Chinese goods. That a European movement, with a genuine vision and leadership, could gain some traction. Not the EU, that is a dead duck but the notion of a Pan-European movement that sort to reject Globalisation and essentially looked to create a Europe that simply did not need the rest of the world, and especially China, might have some traction. We cannot return to the status quo, that much is obvious.

My concern for many years now has been this country's dependency on energy from dodgy parts of the globe and what would happen if we had another 1970s oils crisis. I realise now that my concern is well founded but it goes much deeper than energy. As you say we need to focus this country on sourcing our goods and supplies internally first and if not from the UK then from stable democratic countries. Cheap has consequences. Chinese factories are now back to work and they will be mass producing the goods and the medical supplies we so desperately require because they caused the problem. A bit like a double glazing salesman going round smashing peoples windows.

That's though a long way down the road. Dealing with the crisis comes first. Agreeing the needed extension next. EU reform after that, and then us rejoining that reformed EU. You know it makes sense!!!

You don't need the EU with all its structures for what I and others are suggesting, just a free trade bloc, nice try though.

And energy independence has to be the primary concern with the reality that a Europe that embraces Russia has all of that solved. More fracking, more money spent on viable alternatives and with Russia in the fold, vast amounts of mineral resources. Europe can feed, clothe and power itself if there is a collective will. Guilty as charged by the way of being hooked on the cheap consumer goods from China. From my mobile to lap tops to clothing and so on. That has to stop. Individuals can make a real difference here if we vow to reject Chinese goods.

Just because the EU is rotten to the core does not mean that some of its founding principles should be discarded either. A Europe pulling in the same direction, in fact a wider Western Civilisation, has everything it requires to flourish. Trade is the key, undoubtedly but strengthening common bonds of identity should not be treated lightly. When you look at many of the social ills in this country then primarily they are caused by clashes of cultural values that come from far outside of the borders of Europe. Outside of the Roma population then I cannot think of any other group of Europeans in the UK who do not contribute far more than they take.
