Our natural role in life is to interpret Americans for other cultures. They aren't so hot at that themselves. As such, they like to use the UK as a staging post for the rest of Europe. It is in the interests of the US that the UK stays in the EU. I guess they can say that if they want, albeit the effect of saying it could backfire on them. They don't understand us much better than they understand the rest of the world, 'two nations divided by a common language'.

Mr Obama has clarified his remarks.He said what he meant was that the UK would not be able to negotiate something with the USA faster than the EU but the USA is only in talks with the EU, hence there is no queue to be at the back of.In actual fact the deal between the USA and the EU has stalled anbd it is possible that it could collapse altogether.

Opening up the UK economy to trade with the USA and others is paramount to economic growth post-Brexit as you know. To make Brexit worth it in essence. But how long would these deals take to arrange? Years and years. And once this long task was achieved it would also mean exposing UK firms and their workers to whole new levels of competition from low-cost countries. Given the way things are going these days, Palace has a better chance beating Barcelona, Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich in consecutive away matches.
