You would think so but actually no. Because the population problem is a global one much like pollution.
All we succeeded in doing by reducing our birthrate was to require an influx of immigrant labour and tax payers. We also created a huge disproportion between old and young as life expectancy increased making health care a much bigger problem.
The population problem we face in the future will be one of migrations from poorer or strife ridden areas to Europe. It has already started and those who keep calling for more provision for refugees need to wake up and see the bigger picture. The near future is very bleak indeed unless we increase food production and distribute it more evenly, stop fighting each other creating refugees and famine, particularly in Africa. Encourage people to stay where they are by improving their living standards and end our dependency on fossil fuels.
You know this all probably ain't gonna happen.

I certainly agree wholeheartedly with the second part, and this is by and large the most important aspect and what politics should be about. I'd be interested to hear how you think we might advance on these issues when poliitics is often about relatively trivial jousting amongst vested interests.

As for population, I agree it's a global issue, but the nature of politics means that there is a focus on the short term and little appetite to address the longer term stuff. Sometimes I wonder if we had the best of all worlds - or, the least worst - in that we had membership of the EU, but at a distance, so some of the bigger issues were being looked at. We retained some sovereignty outside of the euro, so had more economic autonomy. We have a democracy, with some oversight. Not a utopia, but a sort of muddling along sommewhere in the middle.

A one and a two...

No, what we had was the prospect of facilitating the interests of Germany and France while being ruled from Brussels, ultimately becoming a powerless satellite in a European superstate. If we had wanted that we could have surrendered to Hitler.

I think he looks like John Redwood's love-child.
