it depends on what you mean by coup. For me it is someone that you wouldn't expect us to be able to get, not just someone who is/was very good

That's why I don't think that Allardyce was a coup really. Not because he wasn't good for us but because at the time his stock was quite low and we offered him a chance of redemption. It was mutually beneficial

Totally agree.

I don't think any appointment that Palace have made could be considered a ' coup '.

Rubbish, Cannon made his debut against Chelsea who we beat, with Allison in charge. That was the first and last time we'd beaten as London club during our first 4 year stint in the top division.
That's how I remember it anyway

I have been a Palace supporter for many years and the first manager that made me think WOW was Arthur Rowe.

The Allison/ Venables period was so exciting, we became media darlings and we thought that we had cracked it.

It had crossed my mind that Sam Allardyce would give us stability and we could move away from the lower end of the league. Now we will never know.

Bert Head was also a great appointment.

Do not pose a question about the less than inspired managers because that will take ages and I can only type with one finger.

Peter Taylor. Thought was a great appointment with his incredible U21's record. Thought we'd really develop the kids. He ended up buying only 30+ players. Was really strange.

Peter Nicholas overlooked as a member of Big Mals youth system , bit pedantic, I know but I liked him

Allison, he raised the profile of Palace more than any other manager before him.

I was at that game if it's the one that I was thinking of. We were in danger of relegation and Chelsea were desperate to let us win as the local derby was so profitable in the days before TV money. Peter Osgood was away on an open goal, looked around to see no Palace defenders anywhere near him and promptly tripped over an earthworm.

Those were the days

IIRC Allison was hired day before game and it was agreed that Head would select team as he knew players.

After the win, Allison led them on a 1 point in 7 games run that relegated them
