More so I think than either the Conservative and Labour governments (until Corbyn) - who were guilty of failing to represent the interests of citizens of the UK. Ok, they're a one trick pony, but at the Referendum and previous election they demonstrated that they were a significant impact. If we had a reasonably fair political system, they'd have returned twice as many MPs at that election as the Liberal Democrats. I don't like em, but in terms of representing their voters, you can't really condemn UKIP, and really forced the Conservatives into a referendum they didn't want, that they managed to lose.

Be interesting to see what happens to their voters, most I suspect will drift back to Labour or Conservative. I also suspect that the rise of Mr Farage as a 'alternative' might not indirectly have been something of an inspiration to the more left in Labour with Corbyn (rather than another bland tory lite public school boy new labour indenti-kit)

And I think love them or hate them they put the traditional 'big three' on their toes for a while.

UKIP need someone who can avoid falling into cheap political holes - Someone with savy and charisma. UKIP needs to appear reasonable, which is what Farage managed - The survival of UKIP really will be about pulling voters from the left and right wing parties on common shared themes. Notably the 'anti-Islam' parties haven't done particularly well.
