Yes, I was there Nick and it was the most frightening experience of my life. Most of the contributors to this thread seem to think that the counter demonstration was got up by the lefties (Of which I was and am one)but the fact of the matter was that the greatest number of counter demonstrators were black kids from the area. When one of my friends showed them the rotten fruit she had brought to throw at the NF, they showed their bag which contained rocks and metal. The fact is that the NF were intent on stamping their authority on an area with a lot of black people in the same way that Moseley tried to do in the East End before the war (Battle of Cable Street - look it up). There have been comparisons with IS supporters but we are talking tiny numbers as against the thousands of NF thugs. A better comparison is the events in the USA last weekend. Only Trump and the right wingers on this thread would say that the neo Nazis and their opponents are morally equivalent.

There were at most 1,000 - more likely around 500. There were around 4,000 counter-demonstrators and around 5,000 police. There were 214 arrests (mainly from the non-NF riotors - some for looting shops). There were 111 injured, 56 of them policemen. The Socialist Workers Party played a leading role in urging the anti-NF protesters to use violence against both the NF and the police. Edited by hedgehog50 (17 Aug 2017 11.24am)
