There should be a plaque to commemorate the battle of Norwood Junction between Palace and Brighton 'supporters'.

Lewisham Council. I was a computer operator there working shifts. When on the evening shift, which ended at midnight, we made sure we had all parked our cars in the same place in the car park across the road and went to them together because of the high number of mugging taking place.

You must be pushing on a bit . Would you have been working at the old town hall with the water feature that ran from the top down the bottom? I'm just trying to work out where the car park was? Was that where Laurence House is now?

There was a lot of crime around but the lies put about by the NF suggested that mugging in the area was purely a black crime, which was total b*llocks. Just another way of theirs to incite racial hatred.

The council offices were a modern office block near the dog track, across the main road was a public car park. Can't remember full details, I was only there a year and it was a long time ago.
I'm in my 60s - sounds like you were just a kid in 1977, did you have a full grasp of the political and social situation of the time? There was a crime wave and it was predominately black gangs, not completely, but predominately - one black gang allegedly responsible for 90% of the street crime. The council warned its employees to be vigilant.

I think the car park must have been where Laurence House is now. Not the most secure site at the best of times. When we used to come out of the pictures we used to hang around by the bus stops and there was normally a bit of an argument with one group or other.

I was 15 in 1977 and hung around with a real mixture of people including some who were in 'gangs'. These gangs were mixed race, both black and white, mostly 16 upwards. I was told there were a few second hand goods shops around the Lewisham/Lee area who used to accept whatever they nicked with no questions asked. These were run by elderly white blokes.

I had little interest in politics but saw what was happening to my friends and it was wrong. Sometimes when something is wrong you have to try and do something about it.

The police were institutionally racist and have admitted it, despite 2011 I think progress has been made by them.

Whether right or wrong the tories will always be associated with using the police as an arm of the state in the early 1980's.

'institutionally racist' just another politically correct bingo phrase. Despite 2011 they have made progress! You mean them letting the rioters just get on with it? Your last paragraph about the Tories is just the usual crypto-communist rubbish. Of course the police are an arm of the state, whatever party is in power, that is what they are for - to enforce the laws of the state.

That is not a justification for violence.

Its just how it was. You couldn't just rely on the police to deal with the NF and far right, so the ANL et all was a natural progression of similar allied movements defending themselves.

Obviously my experiences are decade on.

The police of the seventies and eighties were dodgy as hell. Wracked with corruption and scandals.

I worked in Lewisham at the time. The actual 'battle' is vastly exaggerated - handbags at midday really. I do remember talking to the left-faction the day before - they had set up a stall (I was left wing myself back then). There was a vicar talking to them too. A guy came up and made some comments about the far left being as bad as the far right - a girl on the stall went berserk, "you fascists are even against a man of God" - the vicar went off tutting.

So nothing has changed then ?

I see, so it would be ok to attack Muslims marching to demand the death of Salmon Rusdie then? You couldn't rely on the police to deal with it. I understand that police with beards were known to flash allahu akbar cards at football matches.

It is bulls***, Michael. If it wasn't you would have defended your story more, rather than deflect on to me.

I have met enough bulls***ters in my life to recognise the type. What I think you do is mix things you were told at the time with stuff you have got off the internet to create an illusion to suit your agenda. You experienced nothing of the sort. Deal with it and accept that you are a dull individual looking to spice up your past to make yourself look like something you aren't.

Yet in all these years you haven't presented one tiny morsel of evidence to confirm your own delusional thoughts. Because you can't because there isn't any. How frustrating for you.
