So was I. There was just over 21 million people in England, Scotland and Wales in 1851. Roughly 300,000 came here during the approximate time of the famine,1845/49, not taking into account those who might have come anyway, and by 1921, 200,000 of the total had left again.

To compare that little blip with a net increase of 250.000 years after year is laughable. And this is the best example you can come up with to support your ridiculous assertion.

Please give up. You are embarrassing yourself.

I think it is you and Hedgehog that constantly embarrass yourselves by your relentless focus on immigration.

Are you Andrew Green in disguise? And Hedgehog must be David Coleman. By the way, Migration Watch was the subject of a debunking by our very own Gavin Barwell so don't expect us to take your quotes from that august institution seriously.

Irish immigration into England during the famine isn't known, many people came to England and moved on. In 1851 400,000 people claimed they were Irish born though. So if England had around 17 million people I guess the settled Irish population represented 2 1/4% of the population. In any case 10% of the current population has an Irish grandparent, so we seem to have coped OK.

But, in the end, you need to get a life. Find something else to worry about because you won't turn back globalisation. Your Tory Government will have no interest in turning away keen, working age and suitably educated people that have been the recent drivers of all UK growth. For example, I very rarely hire UK born employees and I do a lot of hiring.

Well, I use to employ people and I find this attitude despicable.

What business are you in? I'm tempted to guess at one or two possibilities that involve travel, but I shall restrain myself.

You are massaging the figures again but no matter.
The clear point is that any stupid historical comparison is just a desperate spreading of falsehoods to try and normalise the enormous and unprecedented levels of immigration we are now experiencing.

And well done for not employing Brits. You must be proud.

Genuinely unlike you to make such a comment without doing any research first. Despicable indeed! You do know that comes across as a personal slight right?

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky.

^^ racial profiling ?^^racial stereotyping ?^^racism ? (doesn't count against UK people)
Just seems an odd stance to take (for any employer) when a lot of Brits are quite well qualified/experienced.
Perhaps Brits want realistic pay, and you prefer hiring people from less-developed countries because they are cheaper and/or more grateful ?

You are not involved in the 'Asian Wives' market ?

I tend to find you as one of the more sensible commentators on the left.....So while I disagree with that last point the use of the word 'despicable' was over emotional and I apologise for that.

And people like you should keep your ideas to yourself unless you have the vaguest notion about that which you are debating.

Thank you, apology accepted

It is amazing how people misread my comment as me choosing not to hire indigenous employees.

Don't worry, I'm unpatriotic because I don't share the same unsavoury views.
