Just seen the video of the palace fans pushing through the gates. I'll stand by my early comments that most of the blame has to lie with Brighton and the Police. Some people in their heads may feel we live an a utopian society where everyone is nice and honest. Unfortunately, the world isn't like that and that's why we need things like turnstiles and security arrangements. South London isn't the nicest of areas and with the thousands of supporters we have there may be one or two undersiarables. It looks like the Brighton stewards were pushed out of the way by a couple of dozen teenagers who jumped over the clearly inadequate turnstiles. If they had proper turnstyles this would have been impossible. If they had a few police behind them inside the ground they might have put up a bit more resistance. However, you have to pay for police inside the stadium and you have to pay more for full height turnstiles. Given that someone was stood in the middle of the crowd filming people pushing there way in it can't have been that chaotic. It seemed like a pretty feable attempt at crowd management coupled with cut price security arrangements. After being pushed over it appears Brighton panicked and locked out fans with tickets. The police behaviour towards fans waiting patiently outside was pretty dispicable. But the police are all probably Brighton supporters. The inadequate performance of BHAFC's security arrangements for this easily foreseeable issue show that they are incompetent cheapskates who simply don't understand football. They are really just a bunch of guardian readers who've jumped on the bandwagon since it become fashionable. I bet you wouldn't have seen them at the Withdean.

I was locked out and kettled etc like Michaela...her account accords with my delightful experience.I arrived about 7.50-55 just as the riot police were running over to the away turnstiles in military formation and the dogs began sealing the area off so presumably the turnstiles had been closed shortly before then.

Of course not, but it's almost impossible to reconcile someone walking into the ground minutes before kick off, apparently without a care in the world, and Michaela's account, is it not? That would suggest that everything was absolutely fine, right up until kick off, which doesn't accord with what's been reported.

This is how it should have been for everyone and probably was for most. They (brighton) panicked when the 20 or so Palace got in, presumably without tickets (although there is no actual evidence of this) and then threw a strop and took it out on the couple of hundred Palace fans still to get in. Unfortunately I believe that it was Big Barry (from the Players Lounge) who ended up in hospital
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |
