Congratulations to the OP for an interesting thread. Dick Graham, mentioned once earlier, did introduce the innovation of giving random shirt numbers to players so the opposition couldn't work out the formation (this was in the days when No.3 was always the left back and so on). I kid you not. The man was 50 years ahead of his time! More seriously I will always have a soft spot for Bert Head and that first ever season in the top flight. And, as has already been mentioned he brought Don Rogers to the club. Big Mal will always be a hero too. When we played Chelsea in the cup at Stamford Bridge I was pretty terrified of the Shed's fearsome reputation for thuggery. Big Mal came out and strolled round the pitch doffing his fedora to the baying mob. He'd be on an FA charge for incitement these days. Terry Venables would be my choice were it not for what happened when he left the club (the first time). I still think there was something very dodgy about it all and were it not for fear of the libel laws I might suggest he was the Harry Rednapp of his day. I'm going to opt for Bert Head simply because just hearing his name makes me feel young again.

In my lifetime and at the time (and controversially) - Dougie Freedman. I've never seen Palace dominate games in the way they did on occasions at Selhurst in the first half of that promotion season. I'm also in the very small minority who thinks, had he been given more time, Frank de Boer could've gone to be one of the best we had but we'll never know. In terms of Roy, I will never judge how great a manager is until they've been with the club for 2 years minimum. Anything prior to that is just how well they can solve an immediate problem. Big Sam was fantastic at it for example, would've he still been a hero a year or 2 down the line? I'm not so sure. I also remember warring with HOLers at the end of Pardews first season, questioning if he was really the messiah some were adamant he was. Unfortunately in recent times, Pardews the only one we've ever really been able to assess over a sustained period of time. Edited by Mstrobez (15 Dec 2017 9.08pm)

Whilst reading some of the positive comments about Roy Hodgson on another thread it struck me that it really doesn't take too much for a manager to become a potential CPFC managerial 'legend', or at least to be a serious contender for a place in our all time best top five. Number one on the list is of course taken, most likely forever, by Steve Coppell (after whom the new stand absolutely must be named in my opinion) but after that there are fairly few obvious contenders. We have quite a reasonable list to pick from when considering our five best ever players, but if you try to make a top five of managers it becomes quite hard work pretty quickly, which probably says quite a bit in itself. Even so, who is your (second) greatest ever manager, and why? Most of my nominations have some sort of black mark against their names which cancel out their achievements to some extent: Freedman - Built a great side for a pittance in the championship which went on to get promoted and form the foundation for staying there (so far). Also buggered off to Bolton. Dowie - Injected life into a corpse when he came in, created fantastic momentum which ended in promotion, and came a goal away from keeping us up. Then left to be 'closer to his family in the Northwest', which he achieved by managing Charlton. Pulis - Easy to forget how dead in the water the team was when he came in. Rightly awarded League Manager of the Year for keeping us up, not only was this a near-miracle in itself, it was also the key to everything that the club has become since. Then walked out on the eve of the season leaving us in the lurch, lied to the club to get a load of money, and had to be dragged through the Courts where he was found, in no uncertain terms, to have acted with the utmost disdain for CPFC. Any other ideas?
