That's a fairly common thought but I'm not sure that it's true. If people don't watch cricket because it's not on free to air TV how come they all watch football on Sky.

They don't.

They watch match of the day, which is what..about ninety minutes?.....then you get all the related football programmes....match of the day extra, the championship stuff.

And you get MOTD on the main channel, which has the largest audience share.

Also, lets not forget that cricket was never as popular as football and couldn't suffer the same level of exclusivity without paying a larger price.

Also, it's arguable that the Premiership money has been good for the game in England. All it has done is take away football from the lower paid working class and made already rich millionaire footballers even richer....whilst doing little for non elite footballers.

Germany's system has been far better holistically.

English cricket is run by idiots.
We get rid of a world class player like Kevin Peterson because he upset a few stuffy self important Englishmen and yet we still have Cook in the team who clearly can't cut it anymore. Root is a useless captain and English cricket in general has too many Posh boy pansies in it nowadays. Get some real men like Botham back who actually give a damn and have some fight in them.

Yet another abject display and defeat in the 2nd test which starts on Friday and there might well be calls for significant changes perhaps starting with calls for Root to step down as Captain.Let's not forget that this defeat will be on the back of a 4-0 thrashing in Australia and the results in New Zealand when we were out for 58 in the 1st innings !

That said, where are the other players who could step-up to the plate and where are the candidates for Captain ?

Unfortunately, being a real man like Botham won't necessarily make an ordinary man into the best England cricketer of my lifetime. Players as good as him don't come along very often. Andrew Flintoff (another "man" is as good as we've had since then and his test career is shorter and not as good in any discipline. Alastair Cook is in the team because he is running out of partners one of whom might have been expected to eventually take over from him. Joe Root is our best player and had captaincy thrust on him too early in his career. But as Willo says, what was the alternative?

Ben Stokes isn't posh and he has plenty of fight in him as we will all found out when he appears in court

It was in my younger days when football was played in the Winter and Cricket in the summer.

The rot set in partly when the schools started selling off their sports grounds plus the general dumbing down of society so that people with ever shorter attention spans couldn't stomach a game that lasted so much longer than 90 minutes and was also far more technical too

Yeah, but come on, these aspects are nothing to the impact no test matches on during the day had.

My school didn't have a sports field quite suitable for cricket anyway. I played cricket in the park with my mates wanting to be Botham and Gower.

I grew up watching test cricket in the eighties on terrestrial.....the number of youngsters that must have reached really has an impact on what sports they follow as adults.

The dash for cash is great for those thinking short term.....but like in so many cases, it screws the system long term.

The ECB are not good custodians for the game.

This last test was Root's 15th since succeeding Cook and he has only won 5 of them.
England went into this last test having lost 6 of their previous 9 tests and only won 1 - against the West Indies.

Since Trevor Bayliss has been in charge England have won 15 times but been defeated 20 times.

I think I am right in saying that the last season of terrestrial coverage of test cricket was 2005.

That was the year of the wonderful Ashes series which caught the imagination of not just cricket fans but the general public.

What a great advert for the game that was and what a waste of an opportunity it was to build on that interest - instead the sport was by flogged off to the highest bidder. It may have have seemed to make financial sense at the time, but ultimately I believe it has marginalised the game.

I don't think that that is the kind of fight we need.
Cricket does not appeal to youngsters like football does and England does not embrace it like Australia,
India or pakistan.
My son joined a local cricket club when he was younger and they didn't even have nets to practice in. Coaching and encouragement have to be better a grassroots. He ended up hating cricket because all they did was play matches with minimal practice and lost a lot.

Totally agree.

Like most short term decisions it's ultimately dim.
