Many years ago I used to work in E Sussex County Council property department and being the biggest guy there I had the dubious honour as part of my job of notifying travellers that they were illegally parked on Council land whenever it occurred. Didn’t enjoy it and I used to phone the Police to see if I could get an officer to join me. They always had an excuse to say no and the only help I ever got was a Police car parked up opposite whilst I was banging on caravan doors. It was only after I had a shotgun poked under my nose at one caravan door that the Police ever intervened.

Quite simply, the Police didn’t like dealing with travellers and normally gave them a wide berth. Maybe they’ve agreed not to arrest them any more and that’s why they get on so well now!
