Wow. I didn't know that and am very surprised that he outbowled Warney in any aspect

Impressive isn't it. He's also comfortably out-bowled Ashwin this year, taking 28 wickets in 10 innings against 32 wickets in 17 innings.

And a better 4th innings bowling average than Swann, Warne, Underwood and Kumble amongst others.

You don't judge bowlers like that!

All these spin bowlers bowled in better eras with better test batsman.

Warne has 708 wickets at a bowling average of 25, Ali has 159 at a bowling average of 37......37 for frigging hell's sake.

His away bowling average is far higher than his home average and you seem to forget that he bowled very poorly in helpful conditions in the Bangladesh and India tours....as well as a shockingly bad performance in Australia.

He has bowled well so far in Ski Lanka against an average performing Ski Lanka side. If he has improved his bowling, he has improved.

I'm not judging him on it, just mentioning it.

Eras are irrelevant really, you can only play what your faced with and no one is saying he's Warne or better than.

He started out in the England side as a batsman who bowled a bit. He's now our out and out go to spin bowler and is improving all the time.

I have to say I've been impressed with how much he is spinning it.

Of the three out there he has the most revs on the ball. He has impressed me on this tour as a bowler so I'm less closed minded on him now.

I still have hopes on Bess....who is currently captaining the lions but....that's a longer term bet considering he's Leach's number two at the moment.

All players lose form and if you look at Warne's stats in India they were nothing to write home about either

Well....Ali has played 54 tests so we can't say his averages for both batting and bowling are 'form' related at this point.

Warne only has India where his stats are out.....Ali has several.....You don't get an average of 37 by being a spinning success.

Warne's average in India is 43......Ali's is 64.

It's fair to say comparing Ali with Warne is slightly ridiculous so to be fair I'll stop at that point.

I'm lucky enough to have seen Warne live in Test matches several times and about three years ago he lead an Australian all stars team in a 20/20 charity match against a Michael Vaughan all star England team which we attended.

He seems to be a thoroughly genuine bloke as he had plenty of time for all the kids and each team had one "guest" player who had won a competition in the newspaper and Warney let the chappie that he was bowling to whack a couple of sixes off his bowling which is something that no doubt he will dine out on for the rest of his life

Bairstow to bat at three.....which is probably a good idea in the long run....replacing Curran....and Broad comes in for the rested Anderson.

Ordinarily I'd like us to not change a winning combination but seeing as Curran isn't fully fit to play, and seamers have been next to pointless so far in this series, it makes sense to give Bairstow and Broad a run out. No point flogging Anderson to death for no reason at this point in his career.

Stokes can always bowl a few more if we need to rest/rotate the spinners.

If Ski Lanka could hold onto their catches we'd probably be out already.

Bairstow looks set for number three now.....interesting selection issues.
