Or just perhaps Meyer isnít as good as we all thought he would be? From what Iíve seen so far he isnít worth 90 minutes in the prem? Hope Iím wrong, but so far Iím not impressed :-(

I think Meyer is currently receiving a bit too much criticism from fans who had kind of believed the hype and had him down as some kind of saviour.

What he does well is pass the ball and retain possession in midfield.....he is a 'Ray Wilkins' type of player....who as some of us will remember used to be referred to as the 'crab' because he always passed sideways.

I watched Meyer out there last night and while he didn't have a good game he was most certainly one of our better players with obvious ability......However, this isn't to put gloss on a woeful Palace performance in general.....the lack of pace and artfulness was painful and a little scary.

We have not bought well in the last two seasons.

That said, Meyer has ability and while he isn't the answer (that's Zaha) he most definitely is a player who should be fighting it out with McArthur for a starting place. I get the impression that he's being required to be more attacking, which he is less comfortable with....though for his game I think it's sensible developmentally.....whether it's the best for us in the short term....we will see.

I can see why McArthur is preferred in that sense. I see Puncheon competing there as well...as he's probably the most attacking of all three.

I think he'd be great in a team with a possession-based style - a style we don't and can't play. Maybe he'd have impressed in the games against Wolves and Newcastle at home, when they ceded us most of the possession and we struggled to get things going - if only Roy had thought to play him.

Agreed.

When Pardew was trying to turn us into more of a 'footballing' side he would have loved Meyer.

I think he has ability and improves our passing ability and ball retention....We will see where he goes from there.

Thus far he has only been given time on the field from the bench, coming on now and then and perhaps this has proved difficult for him trying to make an impact in a struggling team in the PL.Perhaps circumstances will dictate that he is given a run in the side and if so this might prove very beneficial not only to him but the team as well.

Heís a fantastic young player. Iíve seen him at his best.

Read the previous posts, heís playing out of position.

This is what I mean. Itís only a matter of time before palace fans turn on him and deem as not good enough, because as always Palace canít adapt to allow a creative player to thrive.

Heís not gonna impress anyone playing as a defensive midfielder in our team. I said that from the minute we was linked and people got the idea that he would be a replacement for Cabaye.

He came on against Watford, played off Wilf and got an assist within minutes. If heís afforded that role, he could become one of the best players we ever had.

If heís continued to be viewed as a like for like replacement for Cabaye just because our scouting department is incompetent, itíll be the same old story. ďAttitude problemĒ & ďnot really that goodĒ will be amongst the collection of greatest hits from the experts.

Thatís just not true though Sterling. Heís played pretty much all of his career as a number 10 and one season as a ďdeep lying playmakerĒ. So this idea that heís uncomfortable with attacking is false. Itís just heís taking up the position of one of the 2 holding players when he gets given a run out.

He came on against Watford in the Mccarthur position and surprise surprise he had an assist within about 5 minutes.

Itís not rocket science. Heís not playing enough, and when he is itís out of position. If you put Ozil or Silva as holding midfielders, even in possession based teams - theyíd mostly be ineffective and incompetent in defensive duties.

Have Luka and/or kouyate in front of the defence, or kouyate to the right, Meyer can pick the ball up deep, midfield or higher up and be that central creative spark I canít remember the last time we had.

If anyone canít see that after his sub appearance v Arsenal they need to be asked and ask themselves some serious questions.

We also have lower expectations than Schalke, and less immediate on Meyer to deliver his highest, which should be factored in too.

Been saying this since the start of the season...he needs two tacklers behind him to win the ball and feed him...why the fcuk Roy cant see this I have no idea!

I'm frankly shocked at that assessment tbh...he's clearly the most technically competent player we have. When he's come on in games he's changed the momentumn in the prem. Last night he was given hospital ball after hospital ball from Suoare, Punch and Townsend. He needs others to win the ball and feed him...he rarely loses it.

The reason he would have been taken away from being an attacking force with Schalke and used as a holding midfielder would have been precisely because they felt they had better options......or it was what he preferred and wanted.

I've watched him play in a couple of games now and I can only say what I see.

Now I have no issues with using Meyer as the attacking midfielder.....indeed I think that is precisely how we should use him because it's a weakness of ours. However, from what I've seen of him it isn't what he's most comfortable doing....he seems to prefer the 'Ray Wilkins' role.

Hopefully he grows into the attacking mindset more....but I've got to be honest...I think Puncheon is better at it.

Whatever on his wages he needs to be playing and we will see what happens.

Anyone with eyes can see he's the best technical player we have. Great first touch, comfortable receiving the ball with opposition players near, instant vision of where he wants to play it next and an assured pass.

Cabaye would fit that description until he left. He became a central/defensive midfielder after being a creative one. I remember alot of folk on here thought he wasn't that great. Couldn't understand that. He was our playmaker.

Meyer may have played as a No.10 for much of his short career but according to reports he had apparently lost his way. Maybe it is because he's not that quick?

So he had a standout season in central midfield last year at Schalke - they finished 2nd....Last night he didn't seem to be very good on the defensive side - who was he playing alongside?

He's a playmaker. God knows we need one. It is up to Roy to make it work.

Somewhat surprising then that he ended up with us !
Were there any other Bundesliga clubs clamouring for his services particularly as he was on a Free ?
