Apparently so. The dictum that ignorance of the law is no defence doesn’t apply at the FA.

Don't get it, what's the significance of Bussolini?

It’s a eunomian asteroid. It’s funny cos he’s got asteroids.

Or maybe because it sounds like an Italian dictator of a similar vintage to Hitler.

Surely you don't actually think he was being serious Maple.

I think it's now called doing a 'Wayne'.....my partner accused me of doing too much p*** the other night....But I told her don't be ridiculous I'd never sell anything valuable.

I've noticed that younger contestants on quiz shows often excuse themselves for not knowing an answer by saying "it was before my time" which implies that general knowledge starts from the date you were born.

Hiroshima? Russian Revolution? Assassination of JFK, Pearl Harbour? The Great Depression? Suffragette movement? Spanish Civil War? Vietnam War? What? No mate, all before my time.

Not to mention the Battle of Hastings, the Spanish Armada and the Great War! (BTW it's Harbor, not Harbour). What you are, of course, highlighting is the general thickness of British people. That's why quiz shows that require contestants of that ilk now have to be dumbed down to the point that there are actually very few questions asked, and contestants are expected to deliberate moronically over a small number if multiple choice answers in the time it would take 'Mastermind' to ask about 12 questions.

Actually it was ITV to give them due credit. But, yes, it seems remarkable and "lamentable" that Wayne is oblivious to an aspect of relatively recent history.

To give even more due credit, it was 'Thames Television' that made The World at War. Yes, it was broadcast on the ITV network.

Dimwit MP David Lammy being a prime example.

It does look as though the FA were desperate for a reason not to do anything here so his equally desperate “excuse” was accepted. It’s just not believable that a 32 year old person is that ignorant.
It’s a sobering thought that he’d rather be thought of as a moron than someone who made a bad joke.

Bad joke? Good light hearted piss take of Hitler. What’s so wrong with that. Go read some of the old trash mags. Don’t let anyone here especially the newcomers ever forget we won the war and beat Hitler.

Like some on here I suspect he did know what he was doing and that it was just a bad taste joke which we have all done at some time in our life.

If we take him at his word however I think the panel should have asked him the following questions.

How many times have you worn a poppy on your football shirt and stood for a minute's silence? Why do you think you were asked to do that?

It was also pointed out that Wayne as part of the Welsh squad has been to Germay and Israel perhaps he should have taken 5 minutes to learn something about their history.

I don't believe he should have been charged this is the FA getting their tighty whiteys in a twist. In the old days the gaffer would have rapped his knuckles and told him stop being so bloody stupid.

That is the gift that keeps on giving. Especially since two of the few correct answers with which he was credited were wrong anyway.
