His point is that with such a huge backlog of flagged posts they are either in the business of intentionally not removing troubling or illegal content, or they are ill-equipped to do so. And both lead to the same kind of outcome. The result is certainly freedom of expression, but it will have a biased towards being skewing towards illegality (endless person specific death threats, illegal uploads and so on) over time if people know they can get away with it. Pr-0nhub recently had a similar situation [Link] Hopefully that shines a light on naive takes on what happens when platforms are not appropriately moderated and some of the inevitable consequences of it.

No one elected the far left in Silicon Valley to police free speech on the Internet.

And your framing of why censorship is happening is extremely kind.....This isn't about death threats or anything else, it's about censoring conservative voices and competition.

Which left wing silicon valley company has had to build its own servers and infrastructure?

It's been happening for years and this is just the latest purge.

I'll say again, when the Internet laws were draw up and protections and advantages given. It was not for create an Internet one message political landscape.

On the topic of death threats, there are plenty of them on Twitter.....It's fine if they agree with who they are aimed at.

Oh and the CEO of Parler had to leave his house of because of death threats......conservatives get them all the time.

This ignores the point I made really. That not bothering (for whatever reason) to get around to moderating many thousands of flagged posts as happened with Parler and P-r0nhub alike never leads to anywhere positive, anything but. There was an endorsement of this lax approach, and I was explaining why it's a bad idea. There are of course problems with over policing and its opposite.

As for death threats, people of all political stripes receive them. Parler was a convey belt of direct death threats. Did it matter to you then or just when it shuts down and the CEO gets them too?

Here from just yesterday is a story about one of your Proud Boys using Parler to theaten and encourage the death of a Senator [Link] Sure these things can happen on any platform, but it's routine on these alternatives for obvious reasons and the routine lack of action is an encouragement of more of the same.

No, I addressed the point you 'really made' with my first sentence.

And once again, which left wing silicon valley companies have been booted off?

You wish to highlight Proud boys being violent but so what? these left wing companies host the same violence from groups they approve of....antifa, and there are tons of death threats on Twitter.

Which again, was a point I'd already made in my previous post....did you even read it? I suppose you must have because you highlighted the last sentence....but still it didn't stop you making points I'd already answered.

If they have managed to bring 15k troops to DC in 4 days why couldnt they bring 5k in 2 days to ring the Capitol building. This seems more and more like a plan from the left to set trump up for impeachment. I'm beginning to fear for american people if this is the mindset of the top democrats.
Stupid voting for dangerous.

You don't really get to tell other people what point they're 'really' making. The point they are actually making will do just fine. It was a comment about what often happens when where is a lack of moderation, rather than as could be argued, too much of it. That was perfectly clear.

The reality of two Americas....an inauguration with thousands of troops needed to protect it.....where most of those troops wouldn't have voted for Biden & Harris.

All the American dissentient right leaders have been calling for no violence: It's pointless.

'According to the Washington Post, relations between Trump and Giuliani have dramatically cooled. Trump has instructed his aides not to pay Giuliani’s outstanding fees. The president is reportedly offended by Giuliani’s demand for $20,000 a day – a figure the lawyer denies, but which is apparently in writing. White House officials have even been told not to put through any of Giuliani’s calls.'

Imploding – Although I never understood Trumps infatuation with Rudy. Could have done a lot better for himself.

This seems an implausible and illogical scenario to me.

I cannot imagine those running Congress, who are both Republicans as well as Democrats, deliberating deciding to put themselves in harm's way just so they could impeach Trump. They could have done it anyway, with all he's been saying over the last 2 months. The reason Trump is being impeached is because of Trump. Nothing else required.

Such an idea feels as unlikely as that the election was "stolen" when everything points to it being perfectly fine.

Such ideas might appeal to those in Trump's base who believe anything that discredits the Democrats and nothing that discredits Trump but surely not an objective, dispassionate observer in the UK?

For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

My point pertained to real world examples (Parler and pr0n-hub) of what happens when a blind eye is turned. The result of thousands of posts or pieces of content flagged or otherwise being unviewed by those responsible for moderating. It was said in response to a 'who cares' attitude to such a thing happened. Maybe those r-aped or abused who had the footage uploaded to the internet and fought for 'years' to get it taken down despite flagging it for example? And it doesn't take much imagination to see what the consequences were on Parler.

Discussions about moderation have multiple facets, not only those that matter to or impact you. My focus was very relevant as with the pr0n-hub example (which is not even political) as it still resulted in them taking the vast majority of their content offline aside from 'approved' uploaders, as various providers and advertisers were dropping them due to not wanting to be associated with their 'content'. Something that happens as result of these laissez faire attitudes when the reality of what that results in becomes apparent.

As for platforms getting taken offline, I have already explained how alternative platforms, if they take the right approach, can fend off any attempts to take them offline anyway, using PirateBay as a good example of technical competency. The owner of Parler was 'Sunday League' in comparison. He even had such lax security that the entire sites content was downloaded prior to it being taken down (IDs and all). Very negligent in the face of what was an obvious risk.

As long as an individuals aren't breaking them law I have no issue with what they say or do online, though the company that host them may also have their own terms of service. I would much rather people publicly post anything from ideas to threats to illegal content publicly. When it's pushed underground that doesn't really benefit anyone. When it's posted publicly it can be more easily argued against, addressed or dealt with. So I wasn't particularly against Parler or in favour of it being taken offline anyway.

It appears they've even commented on it

Pirate Bay Founder Thinks Parler’s Inability to Stay Online Is ‘Embarrassing’ - [Link]

"The pirate bay, the most censored website in the world, started by kids, run by people with problems with alcohol, drugs and money, still is up after almost 2 decades. Parlor and gab etc have all the money around but no skills or mindset. Embarrassing.

The most ironic thing is that TPBs enemies include not just the US government but also many European and the Russian one. Compared to gab/parlor which is supported by the current president of the US and probably liked by the Russian one too.

In all honesty, the reason we did TPB was to bring freedom and take back control from a centralised system. The reason that Gab et al will fail is because they're just whining b!tches that have only one ideology: egotism. Sharing is caring y'all."

600 grand a month is a bit steep when you get nothing to show for it I suppose.

One of Trump's issues was the disconnect between what he'd say to his supporters and the team he'd put together to bring those policies about.

Early on he ditched Bannon....who was a believer and wrote the 'American Carnage' speech and swapped him for Jared Kushner, who seemed more interested in Israel than America.....in terms of shaping his administration and matching the words to actions it was a poor choice.

Trump's picks for most positions were pretty poor most of the way through.

Still, I never really got the impression that Trump really cared all that much and 2020 Trump was a pale version of 2016 Trump.

That said he did some good work building confidence in the economy and in showing that America really was put into some very poor trade deals and wasn't holding its own.

And the military liked him as he stopped using them as the world's Policeman and instead focused upon their development.
