Well according to some on here any face protection was better than none?
I actually sold both types, but certainly it's not sustainable when they are literally being given away now.
Don't forget the mantra was '15 day's to flatten the curve' well that was a year ago. Enough people have had the vaccine (& certainly built up an immunity to it)
Mask up if you like, wash your hands & be sensible, but this bulls*** has to stop & we all need to get on with our lives, because if like some on here you're waiting for the holy grail of No reports of Covid then we are going to be locked down forever.

The US is no doubt always a country where States have their own particular take on things, so I guess the differing approaches are to be expected. As you say, it's a big plus that the vaccine is now available to those who need it so hopefully whatever approach is taken going forward the country is or will soon be past the worst of it!

Zero covid appears to be the lockdown fanatics new position - Auckland locked down again over a handful of cases - time to reopen, stop the fear p*** and get on with our lives again.

We are coming out of it now, the only real threat we will have is mutations which could take about six weeks to tweak for another vaccine we'll all have to have again lol that's the worse case scenario we have facing us now, some areas around the country where the uptake for the vaccine has been awful is sadly holding us back somewhat, hospitals can now cope and having the situation as it is now is resulting in care for other people with other serious problems being properly seen and treated, if we open everything up this moment then very sadly the virus could again fill the hospitals up to the extent that these other patients will continue suffering and getting worse which is costing the NHS even more, it's a very tricky and nasty situation where you have to actually see it to believe it.
Our government has been way too slow to react to practically everything I wouldn't expect them to react quickly now with opening everything up.

Mutations isn't it and getting on top of any outbreak situation is key to controlling this nasty bug, are they as good as us with their vaccines and the amount they've given out I wonder?

The message created by Trump was always going to cause ridiculous uncontrollable outbreaks all over the place as we're seeing, he has supporters and lots of them who still behave as he did in basically not taking the issue seriously and it's until the population around the whole world does take the situation seriously that we are going to continue with this shit longer then it needed to be, people that wonder around without masks saying f off every time I mentioned it to them are the ones that are keeping this bug happy.

Was printing money, QE Quantitative Easing or MMT Modern Monetary Theory mentioned in today’s budget, or was it never going to be, because the Chancellor and government wouldn’t mention it, or wouldn’t use it as a major strategy to reduce this debt?

In the last week I’ve heard over and over the question how this debt is going to be covered and I haven’t heard increasing the money supply, apart from Alistair Darling saying it should never be long term or a main policy.

Borrowing is also forecasted to rise in the years ahead, so this argument that rates are very low now doesn’t satisfy every concern. And when you have a budget deficit you’re always borrowing on new rates of interest to cover previous borrowing on previous rates of interest. It doesn’t matter is probably an answer. I wonder when the days of 300% debt to GDP arrive.

Well in fairness to New Zealand, they have played the whole covid situation unfathomably well compared to most countries, precisely because they both kept it out of their country and had really early brief localised lockdowns when it did emerge (rather than waiting until it was too late for them to be effective). Outside of that life has carried on as normal.

They're now starting vaccinating and so really once that's panned out there will be no other option but to open up. There are clearly unknowns as to mutations and so on, but realistically if we could click our fingers and have emulated NZ's approach to dealing with covid-19 we would do so in a heartbeat.

You are clearly under the misapprehension that you can control large populations of people.

That can only be done down the barrel of a gun.

I'm not even going to touch on how mad I regard the balance between state control on liberty and 'safety' that this last year has undergone.

However, it isn't realistic to think we could have responded like NZ.

The economy is different, the population far higher, demographics more varied, the population density far higher......It's not like with like.
