I’ve just edited my post. Slough is the only town/borough in tier 3 in the whole of the south apart from Kent. Yet Swale and Thanet cause Kent to have all establishments closed.

Very odd people in that part of the world.

I can understand villages in the immediate vicinity of Swale being included but not the whole of Kent.

It's the same with London, before the lockdown the problem was north of the river so why include the southern boroughs.

Conservative MPs unhappy with the proposed new tiering divide up into at least 4 clearly identifiable camps :

1.The 40 or so who are resistant to the thrust of Government policy for a mix of economic, health-related and civil liberties reasons. The Covid Recovery Group (CRG) is reserving its position.

2. Conservative MPs in areas that saw little respite between the first lockdown and the second – and have none in view now. That’s many of those both in Red Wall seats and in more traditional blue constituencies outside the Greater South East.

3. Conservative MPs whose constituents now face more severe restrictions after lockdown than before it. That includes those in the Tier Three areas of Kent and South Gloucestershire.

4. Conservative MPs who feel that Covid-19 in their constituency or local authority areas is relatively low compared to those in neighbouring constituencies or areas, but are being dragged into higher tiers because case numbers are higher in neighbouring areas or seats.

The new tier proposals will be voted on next week. It’s hard to say how large the Conservative rebellion will be. But it’s not inconceivable that Boris Johnson could find the Government having to reply on Labour to get them through.

This appears to be why officially....

Case detection rates in all age groups.

Case detection rates in the over-60s.

The rate at which cases are rising or falling.

The number of positive cases detected as a percentage of tests taken, known as positivity rate.

Pressure on the NHS.

I suspect that some areas have fewer hospitals per head and are more at risk to pressure so the situation appears distorted

Red and Blue though and through (more than 50 years)

Interesting point about hospitals

Hospitals in East Kent have the second worst A&E waiting time in the country. Maybe that influenced Government thinking.

Yes. Still don’t see why the whole of Kent is in tier 3.

Yes, but the whole of Kent, because of that pocket in East Kent?

Luckily there aren’t any big areas like that pocket of Kent to drag us all down. Oxted establishments will do okay with Westerham hamstrung. Just proves how ridiculous doing Kent as a county really is while other parts of the country aren’t by county.

Having perused the Gatwick website I have gleaned there are only 11 departures between now and 17.00 and just 14 arrivals during that period.

On some days even fewer arrivals. Still managing to get plane loads of Ukrainian farm workers coming though. Most arrivals have very few passengers on them and some are domestic flights. Still only NT open and rumours are this will remain the case until Easter. Seems airport is in financial trouble having had to recently borrow £300m not sure who from.

What a terrible state of affairs.
Devastating for all those who are no longer employed either at Gatwick or in the supporting industries.

Exactly- I work in Westerham and will meet up now in Oxted instead, 2 miles down the road.

I live about a mile from the Surrey border and, I guess, 75 miles from Thanet but I am in Tier3 - complete madness.

I totally agree and I believe yesterday I uttered to my wife "The lunatics have taken over the asylum". Barking mad.

To set the record straight I am a member of the Conservative Party and have been an activist for many a year.

Wow. And I had you down as a fully paid up member of the Socialist Workers' Party. Shows how looks can be deceptive.

Daily update Willo. Some of those arrivals are, in fact, positioning flights. These are basically flights flying around to keep the pilots “hands in”. No real benefit to the airport.
Many of my neighbours have lost their jobs with GAL/BA/EASYJET, not sure how long it will take to recover.
From a personally selfish point of view, maybe my local council will stop building on local green belt!
