This is the problem: one is named as a tribute, the other as a slur. But the outcome is the same.

How is the outcome the same?

No-one attaches any blame to Germany for German measles if, like me, they don't think about it and if they bothered to find out they still wouldn't. If anything Germany's reputation is enhanced.

Throwing slurs at China by calling the virus the "China-virus" negatively impacts their reputation.

Opposite outcomes.

The outcome is the same because they’re both eponymous. The intention doesn’t matter. Until you looked it up you didn’t know if German measles had been named out of respect or not.

There is no doubt this originated in China, call it what you like, blame Trump all you like, the fact is intentionally or not the Chinese are responsible for this pandemic

I think you are deliberately being simplistic.

That it's eponymous doesn't mean it's the same outcome. Names can communicate a variety of meanings and emotions.

Whether I looked it up or not I didn't blame the Germans for German measles and I wager nor did you or anyone else.

That people now blame China for the virus, whether fair or not, is indisputable.

I think we will just have to agree to disagree.

But it did start in China as you well know.
There’s a town in California called Corona and they’re not complaining.

That it seems it first emerged in China seems established. How though remains unknown, despite lots of theories and speculation.

So to hold the Chinese "responsible" is grossly unreasonable unless it is established that it was either because of a deliberate action or carelessness. That is what the WHO is now trying to establish.

We aren't, quite rightly, being held responsible for the mutation that was first seen in London and that being referred to as the "English-virus". It emerged here though.

Mr know it all Trump was quick to make assumptions and use them to his personal benefit but I hope we are all a little more reasonable and fair-minded. And patient. We ought to know soon enough.

Why on earth would a town called Corona complain when no-one blames them for a pandemic?

This isn't about names being used. It's about blame being inferred.

Poor old Corona beer suffered though. I think most of us can agree that it's crap beer anyway, regardless of its name.

2.2 million people have died. If you think attributing blame to the country responsible for the origin of the virus is so wrong then your priorities need some serious thought.

The WHO are currently working out exactly how Trump and Brexit voters created the virus, funded by Russians of course. Can't wait for the report/white-wash.

Well if Daltrey and Townshend are on the case they won’t get fooled again.

I am not for a moment underestimating the seriousness of the pandemic or the importance of understanding how it started so that the global community can learn the lessons and take steps to avoid other outbreaks in the future.

Once again though you are jumping to conclusions and attributing blame. If you think that making assumptions prior to the facts being established is wise then it is your priorities that need serious thought.

The priority is to discover all that happened and to do so in a way in which China fully co-operates. Blaming her before the truth is known will likely make her defensive and uncooperative. Indeed it probably already has.

Trump playing politics with the pandemic has done us all a grave disservice and those who fall in line with him are not helping.
