Make up your mind. In your last post you said we had kicked on under Hodgson.
To the contrary - 11th, 12th, and 14th placed finishes suggest we are not kicking on. We are currently 13th, and yet only 2 points separate us from 10th, this is why I pose the question - can we kick on and go for it?

Edited by southnorwoodhill (04 Feb 2021 11.25am)

Kicked on in the form of consistency, we haven't been involved in a relegation situation at all with Mr Hodgson, that's never happened before to the number of seasons he's been here, that is progress.

Picking Kelly ahead of Ferdinand was a good decision.

He came on in true Roy tradition with two minutes to go and never played again making this the record for the least amount of playing time for an England international.

Just call me Willo 2

I believe some have concluded that 'Willo 1' is a cure for insomnia so perhaps gallivanting down that pathway will not enhance your reputation!!!!!

I did however find your fact apropos Kelly interesting so gained my seal of approval.

I see. Progress means successive lower finishes each season. Well Mr Hodgson has certainly kicked on to achieve a certain consistency in that regard. I'm glad you helped to explain it.

You might do well to see where we are come the end of the season now, just saying like...

Indeed. Which is why I posit a 10th place finish as a sign that there is some ambition to improve.

I get your point, but I think it is possible to attach too much importance to final league positions as a mark of progress, especially when there isn't much riding on it.

One year under Pardew we were about 14th or maybe 15th going into the last game of the season, but we won and three (maybe four?) teams above us all managed to lose, so we jumped up into 10th, which is still our highest finish in the modern Premier League.

Did that late leapfrog act prove us to be a genuine top 10 team? Probably not. We hadn't been above lower mid table all season until then. It just worked out that way due a combination of last day results in dead-rubber games.

Instead of final league placing, you could just as easily judge the season on how quickly, easily and at what cost the team achieved its objective of staying up. If you do that, Hodgsons teams might show distinct signs of 'progress', though I appreciate many will want a different objective to begin with.

We do get more money for each place up the table we finish, but probably not enough to make 10th a success and 15th a failure. It's much of a muchness once the team has done what it set out to do.

The team that finishes the season in 10th place is genuinely the team that earnt 10th place.

When arguments that you put forward are refuted you try and claim it as bending the truth. Yet you try and claim that the position at the end of the season isn't the absolute truth.

You're argument is contrived nonsense.

Roy has had the biggest gap of any manager we've had in this PL phase between a need to spend and actual spending. By that measure, his work has been outstanding.

There have been some games this season, though, where the players' mindset has been awful. Chelsea and Brighton stand out in my mind. He must own some of that.

After some games, I've really doubted if he's the man to lead us. But in my mind, our points haul this term marks an exceptional performance thus far. And for that, he deserves much credit.

It would be atrocious to sack him now, that's for sure. A local man, a man of integrity, who has avoided any sort of relegation risk when we are shopping mostly at poundland.

Let this season be his last, with our deep gratitude, if that's his wish. Which I have a hunch it is. Then pray we get a good replacement.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.
