IRS to hand over Trump's tax records to Congress, why? I find this really odd. "The House Ways and Means Committee has previously argued that it required the Republican former president's tax returns for an investigation into whether he complied with tax law. " In other words they have no evidence he's broken the law but they want to go on a fishing trip. He's being audited by the IRS who are the experts what would make sense is for Congress to ask for an update from the IRS e.g. have you found any evidence of wrong doing so far? And perhaps more pertinently when will you complete the audit, has Trump co-operated, is he blocking you etc. This just smacks of political revenge the people who should be answerable to Congress are the IRS.

You go on fishing trips when you have no evidence but would like to find some to damage an opponent. This isn't the case here. The House Committee have evidence, which they need to verify. Trump refused to co-operate and used the IRS audit as an excuse. The IRS said their audit was not a barrier to the returns being handed over. So the Committee applied to the Justice Department (not to the White House or the Democratic Party) and their lawyers have concluded that the Committee's case is compelling and have ordered the IRS to release them. No revenge involved. Just a Committee doing its job to root out corruption in high places. Trump will scream "witch hunt" as he always does when threatened with investigations, but that's only to be expected. If there is nothing to hide, why hide it? The noose is tightening.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

They want to stop any chance of him running again, quite clearly. Wisbech will pretend that it is all above board because he is incapable of being honest.

The IRS is presumably accountable to Congress like HMRC is to our Parliament if not why not. It is perfectly reasonable to demand the IRS explain to Congress where they are with their investigation of his taxes and how long before they complete them. It is not responsible to bypass an IRS investigation and go on your own fishing expedition. If Congress has evidence of wrong doing they should present that to the IRS. If they are unhappy with the IRS performance they have the votes to do something about it. I would not be happy if the Tories launched their own investigation into Starmer's tax affairs bypassing HMRC.

However, information in the financial records which support those returns can reveal much else. A Committee investigating suspected corrupt behaviour, for instance, could very well gather significant evidence from a forensic examination of patterns and contacts in those records. If found, they wouldn't judge the criminality. That would go to the Police, prosecutors and then to a Court. They could though make a report on how to improve things and avoid a repetition. The point is that the House Committee have convinced the DoJ's lawyers that they have a valid interest in seeing the returns. We haven't seen the case they have made but unless you believe those lawyers are politically motivated, which I don't, then that is enough.

I am not defending Trump and it would be no surprise if he has fiddled his taxes but to start with the correct people should investigate him.

The dems need to be careful. Mr biden has a son who could be next if this precident of bypassing the correct departments is set. I'm sure trump is well aware of this and is simply playing it so it goes too far to uturn. He will not go away but others might.

You are still missing the point. The IRS won't be looking for, or noticing criminal behaviour unless it's blatantly obvious. That's not their role or area of expertise. The Democrats aren't involved in the DoJ's decision. Nor is the House Committee interested in whether Trump fiddled his tax returns, which is the role of the IRS. They are looking at other matters, notably his connections with foreign entities who may have been financing him.
