In short, the news reader said, fire in cables in Kent, and we paid France to make some more and send to us, which they did- very neighbourly or the European chaps, tres bien monsieurs!

Valid criticisms can be made, though in truth Labour made no great changes in power.....made things worse in reality with GP contracts, selling the gold, not fixing energy nor housing.....it didn't take a rocket scientist to see problems.

However, the idea that the conservatives are something akin to evil is ridiculous. The sheer size of the welfare state attests to that.....You came back here, when you profess such dislike of the country.

I doubt it was for jars of marmite.

I have a good credit rating so if I don't like the new deal and there are better ones available ? I can switch.

I feel sorry for people who are hard up and may be in arrears as I doubt they will have the same choice.

I'm starting this thread to raise a couple of issues I will post on these separately to make it easier for people to respond to.

My deal runs out end of this month. I switch every year, much like car insurance and so on. This time, just in time for the price cap raise, and just in time for the supply constraints for both gas and electric to go into a turbo squeeze.

All the best deals have been pulled, the best I can get is a 40% increase. The chat is that after this is over there may only be around 10 suppliers left in the UK. In 2018 there were 70…

The sooner someone cracks fusion the better. Although like the electric car that’ll be deferred so the energy industry doesn’t completely collapse overnight

Did you know? 95% of people are morons.

When the old monopoly was split up, the infrastructure bit became Transco, and Transco is now part of National Grid - nothing to do with British Gas.

You are still not quite correct.

National Grid owns the gas transmission network (the big pipes that carry gas up and down and across the country) whereas regional operators own the local distribution networks (the smaller pipes that go all the way to individual properties).

British Gas (as you allude) is merely a gas trader just like all the others, with (as you say) no responsibility for any pipes. It just happens to have a lot more customers than all the others. It also has an appliance servicing business.

I have a fixed tariff contract with Ovo who have sent a "note of reassurance ". The contract is until September 2022 so unless they go bust should be ok.

The energy companies that are going bust seem to be those that were just trying to clip a percentage on volume and keep low overheads. Leeches basically

As a general point we need to be much more energy independent. We are buying gas that is produced by fracking from other countries at a higher price than we can produce ourselves which is economic stupidity. The argument for SMR's is compelling. If we had the ability to generate through hydro that would be great, but we don't. Wind power is unstable and the carbon damage in building the turbines in huge, and they have a relatively limited life span. However, many in the wind lobby earn millions of pounds allowing turbines on their land, Cameron's father-in -law being one.

Tidal seems to be theoretically good, Swansea was binned by Govt vested interests but now seems to be possible through a private investment

Just them? My wife worked throughout the pandemic, she will be hit as well. As she is not one of the above, presumably not such a good headline

A lot of that will come from the £90K+ consultants' salaries though.......not to mention the even better paid Management staff.
