I use Paypal for small amounts with companies I don't know e.g. Ebay but the big and important stuff I use the credit card.

Something else I found out say you want to buy furniture for £5k but your credit card available balance only allows £500, however you can pay the balance in cash. As long as you pay £100 on your credit card the whole purchase is protected by the credit card company. I got this from the horse mouth when it happened to me.

There are many establishments that don't take Amex due to the high transaction charges so be careful there

I have quite a few credit cards but they all have specific uses

First Direct for all my daily purchases including Amazon

Sainsbury card for purchases at their store which gets me double Nectar points

Virgin Money for using overseas as they don't load the exchange rate

Barclaycard is emergency card in case Virgin Money card is rejected overseas

All of the above are paid off in full every month

MBNA Visa for interest free large purchases

The best way around this new problem is to get another card and the most obvious one is the Amazon Classic Mastercard which will only be used for Amazon purchases and I have just applied and been instantly accepted with the insulting credit limit of £1,200 but I'm unlikely to spend more than that on Amazon in a month anyway so my problem is solved

EDIT - I also got a £40 gift added to my Amazon account making it very worthwhile changing

I now pretty much exclusively use AMEX because of the airmiles. Most places take it now. (If you are smart you can get enough points every other year for (next to) free long haul business class flights.)

The whole Amazon Visa credit card thing is greed on all sides.

With Brexit, Visa have opened a loophole and have increased their fees 500% to outside the EU purchases.

Even though we are buying with Amazon UK (and almost always buying product in the UK) Amazon are registered in Switzerland for tax reasons so would need to pay Visa's higher fees.

Its not really a big issue as Amazon wouldn't do anything that would impact revenue. There are plenty of other payment options.

The real issue is that 'we' allow all these multi nationals to be based out of tax havens, so instead of hard earned tax going back into the economy, it goes into Bezos's pocket.
