You can apply for residency to avoid the 90 day rule. My understanding is that many of the ex pats complaining about these post Brexit rules are actually benefit dodgers. They were given plenty of time to request residency status in Spain so why didn't they? Because unofficially they were living in Spain whilst claiming benefits in the UK. However now that the Spanish have tightened up the rules these people have to make a choice where they actually live. As for the rules I think it shocking that the Spanish are saying if you want to live in our country you need to support yourself and don't expect to ponce off the Spanish taxpayer. One more point
